I've read Not the Way It's Supposed to Be. I found it to be a very refreshing look at sin, a subject that many modern Christians shy away from, as Plantinga noted. I was especially intrigued by his looking at sin in terms of shalom, but I'm not so sure whether I agree with him in some areas or not. If I were more theologically able, I could tell you more. But alas, I feel as though I'm one of those folks who is so new to Christian doctrine that I must "catch up". That's one of the reasons I'm hesitant to enter debate about these issues.

I thought about going to Calvin Seminary. I live nearby and know a few people who were students at the Seminary and some who are at the college. Calvin doesn't have a very good reputation amongst conservative reformed Christians in the area. I know a former doctoral student at the seminary who said he couldn't recommend it, and another who left the seminary for another, over some of the liberal and unorthodox teachings of the professors. I've decided not to apply to Calvin Seminary.

Calvin College provides an outstanding eduction by secular standards. The theology of it, and its sister seminary, Calvin Seminary, are both dubious. Both institutions are operted by the Christian Reformed Churches, which have gradually been liberalizing since the Synod of Kalamazoo 1924. If you are okay with (at least parially) unsound doctrine, then feel free to attend.

Not to mention expensive ($19,000/year tuition, $6500 room and board).

Soli Deo Gloria

One of my best friends is on faculty at Calvin Seminary and he is thoroughly reformed in the Dutch tradition. I am impressed with the work that they do there.

As for Plantinga, his Engaging God's World: A Christian Vision of Faith, Learning and Living (2002), is a real piece of work. It should be required reading for ALL college freshmen!
