  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just visited on a couple of weeks ago. I've been on vacation for 2 weeks and during that time I go church hoppping just to see what flavors are out there. The calvary chapel I visited was very laid back as far as atmosphere goes. The sermon was more like a Bible study than preaching. Very different from the AG church I go to. A couple of people I saw there used to go to my church years ago. This is their website: http://www3.calvarychapel.com/chelmsford/

I did enjoy the visit.

I go to a Church of God, but I like this group a lot as well. I listen to podcasts and audio recordings of sermons authored by certain Calvary Chapels. They believe in speaking in tongues and other charismatic gifts, but it is sort of common that these things are done in private and as much during church.

What I like about em' is the way they study the Bible; rather than having a lesson on a certain Biblical subject with support from verses taken from random chapters and books, they like expositional study, in which they study the Bible book by book. In fact, some of the local churches will spend months on a single book and teach everything they can about it. They put a lot of emphasis on teaching the Word and not as much on evangelical, lively, Holy Spirit inspired worship like you find often in Pentecostal churches. If you have ever been in a church were the pastor is dancing, speaking in tongues, yelling, and getting really fired up in the spirit, I don't think you will find that same environment in most Calvary Chapels. No church is perfect, but I think they do a good job. From what I've seen, the pastors present a very loving, through, and clear ministry, and I think they do an really great job bring people to Christ and reach out to help and minister to people. You might want to check out the Wikipedia article on Calvary Chapel and the web site of Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale (they have some audio and video sermons). :)
