  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A question. Do you mean a ThM? Or are you referring to a simple Master's degree in theology? I was originally going for my ThM when the Seminary I was attending closed and merged with another school in another state. I ended up going for a ThD in Biblical Theology and Biblical Languages with a minor in Textual Criticism. A ThM is just under a Doctorate, as in either a ThD or PhD, and is rather a strange degree anymore. It is primarily meant to prepare one for a teaching ministry. However, it can serve you very well when serving as a Pastor. Today, for a teaching ministry in either a Bible college or Seminary the Schools are primarily looking for people that have a Doctorate.

If you are interested in a Pastorate you can just work toward an MDiv and meet the requirements for most Pastoral search committees. However, I would highly recommend that you go to a Bible College to get your BA, before considering Post Graduate school. So many Seminaries today are trying to be all things to all people and have watered down their theological training offerings so as to appeal to a wider group of denominations. Unless you are really grounded in your beliefs before you attend Seminary you may really find yourself at a disadvantage.

Well what if i dont want to be a pastorate but more of a biblical scholar?
Your education will do you no good unless you have a plan for using it. Remember, to whom much is given, much will be required. Someone who goes to the trouble of obtaining a Biblical education and doesn't use it becomes like the Dead Sea. It is dead because there is no outlet. All of the minerals and runoff from the Jordan river go into it, but have no way to get out. As the water evaporates, the levels of salt and other chemicals continues to grow and poison everything it touches.

Far better idea:

Get a job at McDonald's or similar, commit in the Law of your mind (Rom. 7:22, 25) to Loving unconditionally all people at all cost, and let the Holy Ghost take it from there. He will, guaranteed by Jesus, give you many times more knowledge and wisdom than can be hoped obtained by even a PhD or ThD or any other formal academia degree.

Sincerely--absolutely, brotherjim

"So great a cloud of witnesses":

1 John 2:27

"But the anointing which you have received of Him abides in you, and you need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, and is Truth, and is no lie, and even as it has taught you, you shall abide in Him."

1 John 2:27 (The Message)

"But they're no match for what is embedded deeply within you—Christ's anointing, no less! You don't need any of their so-called teaching. Christ's anointing teaches you the truth on everything you need to know about yourself and him, uncontaminated by a single lie. Live deeply in what you were taught."

John 16:13-14

"’Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth, is come, He will guide you into all Truth: for He will not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that will He speak: and He will show you things to come. He will glorify Me: for He shall receive of mine, and will show it unto you.’"

John 14:26

"’But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said unto you.’"

Galatians 1:11-12

"But I certify [to] you, brethren, that the Gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, [nor] was I taught it [by man], but [it was given to me] by the revelation of Jesus Christ."

Ephes. 3:3a

"How that by revelation He [Jesus] made known unto me the mystery [of the Gospel]; . . ."

1 Cor. 2:6-13 (select):

"Howbeit we speak Wisdom among them that are perfect: . . . the Wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden Wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: . . . God has revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God. . . . the things of God knows no man, but the Spirit of God . . . we have received . . . the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things . . . the Holy Ghost teaches; . . ."

1 Cor. 1:19

"For it is written, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.’"

Luke 10:21

"In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, ‘I thank You, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, that You have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in Your sight.’"
