Cains story is misunderstood. First of all, plain reading of it doesn't say it was because of plant offering instead of animal. Yes he made plant offering but that wasn't the reason. The main issue was his jealosy and temper. And the other thing is: God was super-patient with him. He said "if you do well, will you not be forgiven" so there is a chance. And also: "if you don't do well, sin rests at your door but you can rule over it". So even if he doesn't do well, he can still rule over sin. That is double-grace. Isn't it enough to tell Cain he can start doing well, its not too late? But no, God also tells him he can go ahead and choose "not to" do well, and even then he will have some other ways around! And then finally, after he did kill his brother, God was still patient enough with him to give him protective mark when he said his punishment is more than I can bear. Most Christians associate mark of cain with mark of the beast, but thats not how Bible reads. The way it reads is that God gave him mark to protect him, not punish him, and it was direct response to his plea.

"Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins" , Hebrews 9:22

This is why cains offering was not accepted by God.

Mercy: God showed mercy to Cain, even though Cain had defied God and poured Abel's blood on the ground.

Isaiah 26:10

New King James Version
Let grace be shown to the wicked, Yet he will not learn righteousness; In the land of uprightness he will deal unjustly, And will not behold the majesty of the LORD.

Cain was insincere in his offering to God. Cain was given a second chance by God, who allowed him to start a new life in a different place. God also marked Cain to prevent others from killing him.

God does show mercy to the wicked and the rebellious ... it is His desire that they turn away from evil ... some do .... some do not.

The offering of Abel was a precursor (symbolic) of Christ of who would shed His blood and provide the way to salvation ... the lamb slain before the foundation of the world (before creation) ... because of God's foreknowledge that mankind would choose to be rebellious.

Revelation 13:8
KJ21
And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the Book of Life of the Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world.

3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. 4 And Abel also brought an offering--fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, [Gen 4:3-4 NIV]

The difference was Cain's offering didn't cost him anything. He probably didn't even give his best fruits. In contrast, Abel offering was costly. He gave up the firstborn, the best of his flock, reflecting his sacrificial commitment to God. Cain's offering was cheap, reflecting his lackadaisical and indifferent character.

What I gather from the story of Cain and Abel is that the Cain gave what was commonly taken from the ground while Abel offered "the firstborn of his flocks and of their fat portions", indicating that Abel treated the sacrifice of Yahweh as something set apart and holy (a heart toward the object of worship) through his choice of offerings. He gave the best of his flocks and the best of their cuts, and we can assume he did it cheerfully, raising his god with reverence and adoration through gratitude and thankfulness. Cain, on the other hand, offered what he had as if the worship of his god was simply a duty that must be fulfilled by giving the minimal. Therefore, Abel was blessed (and later called 'righteous') for his faith in his god.

Not sure what happened with Cain. But, he had a son so pleasing to God that He took him so if this is the same Enoch He may not have been a bad parent.
In Genisis 5 Cain seems to be forgotton in favor of seth his replacement.

Abel offered the firstborn of the flock, expressing a desire to offer the best, and a powerful foreshadowing of the role of the first fruits and firstborn in the Exodus, the Levitical Law and ultimately, the firstborn of all creation in the Gospel. If Cain had made an offering of the first fruits the narrative would have plainly stated so. His offering was rejected before he showed any temperament towards sinning.

Cain had a wick spirit on him, not to far from Satan. The book say in 1 John 1 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. Then we have what Paul says in Hebrews 4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. Now let's take a look at Jude 1: 11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

With four people on the earth and Satan running around in chains of darkness, Cain decided to listen to Satan. Cain got himself blotted out of the book of life. That also let's us know that thou shall not kill was before the Moses and the Israelites, with the Ten Commandments.
