Caesaropapism

Can somebody explain to me what Caesaropapism is? Is this when a church is subordinate to a governing body or is this when a church is also a governing body?

Also, has this ever been a characteristic of the Catholic Church, or is this strictly the Orthodox Church?

It's either the pope having the ultimate temporal power or the emperor having the ultimate spiritual power( i.e. the pope acting as emperor or the emperor acting as pope).

I forget which one it is tho. One is called caesaropapism and the other is called papocaesarism, but i often mix them up.

I've heard the word before (mainly in reference to the Eastern Orhodox Church and the Emporers). Actually I never had the opportunity to look it up before (so thanks for giving me that.) Anyway this is what I found:

Caesaropapism is the phenomenon of combining the power of worldy (secular) government with the spiritual authority of the Christian Church; most especially, the subordination of the spiritual power of the Christian Church to governmental authority; in its extreme form, it is a political theory in which the head of state also exercises dictatorial governmental power over and within the church.

Sounds like religion is just being made a department of the State Government--IOW, man (as in the Emporer) trumps God.

Yes, very true. The context I'm reading this in is about the Great Schism.

The schism itself to me seemed to involve a fairly unholy mix of religion and politics on both sides. I think the statement of the Mutual Lifting of Excommunications between Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras I is right to point out that was a pretty troubled period in the history of the two churches.

I try to learn as much as I can about the Great Schism, but it all seems so complicated.

Generally, the Orthodox are accused of being caesaropapist and the Catholics are accused of being papocaesarist.
