Everybody panic!

They'd better watch out. Those dastardly bullets are on the move.

Police are treating the unattended ammunition as a crime. Mr Khan alerted them at 10.16am, and they arrived at his shop to pick up the bullet at 11.32am.

You never know. Maybe the bullet went there to rob the store. You never can tell with those evil little .22 shorts. They are pretty shifty.

I was talking to a british friend of mine about the different attitudes towards guns between our two cultures/countries...I did not know this but in Britain to have any kind of handgun is an automatic five year jail sentence.
Rifles and shotguns are allowed, with licenses, for hunting.
I don't know how they feel about the bullets themselves.

Interesting story, actually. Makes me wonder how public perception of guns and firearms would change following stricter gun control laws. I mean, if finding a single unfired bullet lying on the floor in a doorway is considered cause to call the police, then the British view of guns may be more different from ours than I thought.

Any Brits care to chime in here? How do you and your neighbors view firearms? Would you respond the same way?

I think the vast majority are opposed to gun ownership. and i think bullets and guns go hand in hand therefore if bullets are found then the police must be informed and the bullets removed from the public.

I am deeply opposed to firearms. no possible good can come from ownership of firearms. certain people require them i suppose, farmers and the suchlike but everyday members of the population should not be allowed to own a guna and a mandatory sentance should apply unless someone can convince a judge that the gun was needed.

I don't see any point in handguns. They do more harm than good. In fact I don't see the need for guns in cities at all. I can totally respect the rights of those who hunt, protect livestock and work the land to own rifles and shotguns, but handguns are a different matter entirely.

We don't need them, and what is more our police don't need them either. The vast majority of our police do not carry firearms.

As far as calling the police over the bullet, I think it is an entirely sensible course of action. Leaving bullets lying around is a fairly irresponsible act. Carrying loose bullets in a city is a fairly suspicious act. There is every possibility that the bullets could be connected to some kind of criminal action.

There are several talking points I see raised in connection with guns on a fairly regular basis. One is that they are for protecting your property. I used to live in a really unpleasant area, I lived next door to a drug dealer and was burgled 3 times. A gun would have been no help whatsover in any of those burglaries as I was out. In fact, the burglars would probably have taken the gun (as I wouldn't have been carrying it to work at the restaurant I worked in at the time). I now have burglar alarm which telephones the police whenever it is tripped. It doesn't sleep, doesn't go out, and cannot be taken by surprise. One more thing on this front is that nothing I own is worth taking a human life. The majority of housebreaking criminals don't break into houses to randomly kill and rape (contrary to what the hoplophiles would have you believe), they break into your house to take things they can sell, normally for drugs. Another point is that they can be used in self defense. I am 28, I ave lived in and work in some of the roughest areas of Scotland, and I have yet to find myself in a situation where I needed to defend myself. Why? Because I don't go around looking for fights, and I don't mind walking away from fights. I have never been mugged, but if I were I would rather hand over the contents of my pockets - a phone (replaceable), some credit cards (easy to cancel) and very little cash - than kill another human being to keep them.

I feel safer living in a society which is not flooded with guns.

In Scotland I am 64 times less likely to be shot dead than I am in the US.

lol. Thats great. I probally wouldnt of been able to keep a straight face if I saw some cops investigating a bullet.

Ok reading throught the article is hillarious, first the caption says "LETHAL: The .22 calibre bullet found..." A .22 caliber bullet is not what I would consider lethal... granted it can be lethal but odds are if you are shot by one, you will easily live. Then there is this line "The bullet, of Swiss origin, was still in its brass casing, complete with enough gunpowder for it to fire itself." How does a bullet fire itself? It actually defies the laws of physics for a bullet to fire itself.

Me too. But in Britain? Where guns are illegal and much less common than here in the US? Yeah, it seems like much ado about nothing to us, but it's different there.

i don't know. i don't own a gun, i don't want any around me. if i walked out of my house tomorrow and found ammunition (even only one round) on my doorstep or porch, i'd want to know WHERE it came from and WHY it was located on MY doorstop.

I could see you thinking that if it ended up on your doorstep if your doorstep was away from the street. But this article made it sound that this was a shop on the street, meaning anyone who walked by could of accidently droped the bullet. I have actually found loaded ammunition walking home from school one day in middle school. I was just laying in the gutter next to the sidewalk.

I'd be like "Oh. Is it in a caliber that I can shoot?"

I don't get the obsession with guns, I really just look at it as a waste of money.

Nobody forces you to go buy them.

I think it's better to be too cautious than to have the general American attitude to guns, which I think a lot of Brits see as obsessive and dangerous.

The "american attitude" towards guns is not dangerous or obsessive. A gun is only dangerous if you dont know what your doing, which why you have to pass a test to go hunting, have a carry permit ect...

Depends on your intention. I can think of situations where someone knowing exactly how to use a gun is very dangerous.
