As I sat sweltering on a hot, hot August night in the desert, I ached for a bit of fresh air. My air conditioning didn't work.
Darkness had fallen hours before, so I thought I might be safe in opening the patio door to the room to let in a cool breeze.
The air that entered the room was hot, hot, hot!! And it wrapped around me like huge arms.
Instead of feeling more miserable, I chose to reflect on how God is the wind, and imagined that the Holy Father was embracing me. To my delight, that hot air suddenly felt wonderful - and inspired the following poem:
Breeze
The lights are out.
The air is still.
The night begins to take its hold
On all that it encompasses.
At last, a breeze!
It filters through the barely opened doorway
As I sit, in quiet solitude,
Reminiscing, reminiscing.
The drifting, sweeping wings of wind encircle me
As though an eagle, dipping low,
Had caught me in his gaze
And set his sights on taking me
To lofty, lofty heights.
The warmth,
The summer heat that lingered on the ground and in the air
Had given shape and form to this intruder,
This breeze that normally I barely feel,
That now is brushing me as though with wings.
The hot breath of that mighty bird is felt upon my neck,
As he circles in to catch his prey,
To carry me away.
Oh, dearest, lovely memories,
You shall not go untended.
Fear not, this mighty raptor
Who envelops me with wings and talons poised.
He is but just a breeze, a gentle, soothing waft of air.
But, oh, you sweetest memories,
You are enhanced, and not neglected,
As I sit in quiet awe of this delightful summer treat.
Remember, oh my mind,
How, in a summer long ago
You felt the tender touch of love
As youthful innocence was given to the heart you treasure.
Your eyes, oh mind, were opened to the beauty of the days
When, quite by chance you happened to be mesmerized by love.
Remember, oh my mind, how simple life had been,
How gentle, warming breezes filled the days and evenings spent
In loves own rapture, with loves eternal warmth.
Today, oh mind, you can remember
Days and days of dreams that were so real, so very long ago.
However, oh my mind, to you, these dreams still live and breathe
As real and warm as summer breezes
That you re-collect and store as tiny treasures for the heart.
The memories that we are gathering today
Will be tomorrows yesterdays,
A gift of love from one who made the summer breeze,
The warmth of life and loving for us all.
The treasures of the mighty one keep coming in abundance.
They emanate from high and low,
From everything we see and hear and feel.
The slightest summer breeze, oh mind,
The warmest ray of sunlight in the desert
Can be a lovely memory for us to keep forever through eternity.
How wonderful is life, so full of treasures so complete
With rainbow-flavored memories like these.
