  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What happened in 1823?
Monroe doctrine. It was the US way of telling the rest of the world that the new world belonged to the US and not to meddle in it.

Theres nothing in the constitution to outlaw the proposal of such a doctrine. Theres plenty of latitude for the president to advance such a doctrine within his constitutionally valid powers of foreign policy.

What is (supposed to be) off limits are various actions by the branches of govt - including, explicitly, acts of war originating from the executive branch.

But the doctrine prompted actions by the branches of government many of which most of us would disapprove today. A good portion of presidents before Trump have pushed the envelop using their presidential powers. This is nothing new.

I had just added to my previous post: Theres plenty of latitude for the president to advance such a [Monroe] doctrine within his constitutionally valid powers of foreign policy.

I do appreciate that we (congress, the citizens) have let this slide. But the Venezuela event is still a major act of war. And its interesting to see how people pit their various desires against each other right now. The desire for constitutional integrity in US govt. The desire to see a tyrant unseated. The desire to support Donald Trump. The first one is losing badly, especially among people who desire the last one.

No, it was the US telling the rest of the world that the new independent countries of the Americas belonged to themselves, and not to meddle with them. We were guaranteeing their independence, not declaring ownership.

But with the Governments who have declared their independence and maintained it, and whose independence we have, on great consideration and on just principles, acknowledged, we could not view any interposition for the purpose of oppressing them, or controlling in any other manner their destiny, by any European power in any other light than as the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition toward the United States.

In Trump's annoucement just now, he declared "We are going to run the country".....
I guess I gave the USA too much credit. They might just try and invade the place and take it over as a colony, instead of installing a puppet regime.

Trump was quite critical of Bush for invading Iraq......it seems he has forgotten what happened in the following years.

...and noted "a much bigger wave" of US military action will be carried out if needed.
One thing I can say is that Trump is above board in his actions, not like previous administrations using CIA for regime change.

Certainly it would be a mistake to allow the brutal regime allied with the drug cartels to continue their reign of terror. Ideally the elected president will eventually return from exile.

They should make a movie about this. I have never seen something like this happen for a long time. One minute I am seeing Trump broker a peace deal and the next taking a dictator out. This is Indiana Jones stuff lol.

Either that or a bad action movie. Or maybe a horror.

The CIA reportedly carried out an attack just prior to Christmas. Early reports indicate Delta Force and the CIA carried out the core of this operation, with the US military taking out Venezuelan command and control.

In any case, I don't consider a POTUS attacking another country without *any* prenotification to Congress to be "above board."

...yet Trump made no mention of the "elected president" -- thus far.

There are many brutal regimes in the world. Should the U.S. take them out too?

Yes, I don't know whether he will return from exile or if there will be another election. This was a designated terrorist organization involved in drugs and human trafficking. Madero will be put on trial.

That wouldn’t involve us running the country.
