Monroe doctrine. It was the US way of telling the rest of the world that the new world belonged to the US and not to meddle in it.What happened in 1823?
Theres nothing in the constitution to outlaw the proposal of such a doctrine. Theres plenty of latitude for the president to advance such a doctrine within his constitutionally valid powers of foreign policy.Monroe doctrine. It was the US way of telling the rest of the world that the new world belonged to the US and not to meddle in it.
But the doctrine prompted actions by the branches of government many of which most of us would disapprove today. A good portion of presidents before Trump have pushed the envelop using their presidential powers. This is nothing new.Theres nothing in the constitution to outlaw the proposal of such a doctrine.
What is (supposed to be) off limits are various actions by the branches of govt.
I had just added to my previous post: Theres plenty of latitude for the president to advance such a [Monroe] doctrine within his constitutionally valid powers of foreign policy. But the doctrine prompted actions by the branches of government many of which most of us would disapprove today. No, it was the US telling the rest of the world that the new independent countries of the Americas belonged to themselves, and not to meddle with them. We were guaranteeing their independence, not declaring ownership.Monroe doctrine. It was the US way of telling the rest of the world that the new world belonged to the US and not to meddle in it.
I guess I gave the USA too much credit. They might just try and invade the place and take it over as a colony, instead of installing a puppet regime. In Trump's annoucement just now, he declared "We are going to run the country".....

One thing I can say is that Trump is above board in his actions, not like previous administrations using CIA for regime change....and noted "a much bigger wave" of US military action will be carried out if needed.
Certainly it would be a mistake to allow the brutal regime allied with the drug cartels to continue their reign of terror. Ideally the elected president will eventually return from exile. In Trump's annoucement just now, he declared "We are going to run the country".....

Sigh....and noted "a much bigger wave" of US military action will be carried out if needed.
Yes, I don't know whether he will return from exile or if there will be another election. This was a designated terrorist organization involved in drugs and human trafficking. Madero will be put on trial....yet Trump made no mention of the "elected president" -- thus far.
There are many brutal regimes in the world. Should the U.S. take them out too?
That wouldn’t involve us running the country.Certainly it would be a mistake to allow the brutal regime allied with the drug cartels to continue their reign of terror. Ideally the elected president will eventually return from exile.
Yes or no?This was a designated terrorist organization involved in drugs and human trafficking. The captured president will be put on trial.
