• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

yes; I even took a class on marriage at my university and I had to read a lot of marriage/relationship books then. Since then, I read new books on the subject for my own enjoyment and enlightenment.
There seems to be so many of them these days it's hard to know which ones are not worth their paper. I'm not sure if people are allowed to suggest good ones on the forums (Jennie), preferably Christian ones.

Why wouldn't people be allowed to recommend books to one another?
That makes me sad that you would be fearful of that........a bit too mind policeish.....
I've seen cookie jars labelled "Eat one", picked one and ate it and got slapped heavily on the wrist before*.

(*) It wasn't Jennie who slapped me though. If she does slap me I'm going to force some threads that she's posted a lot in to be deleted so that she won't be able to make her 30k target.

GAh!!!!! You got in trouble for sharing book titles with people here? This horrifies me...............
I'm sure it's OK as Jennie will confirm shortly. Forums usually like to stay away from advertising. It can get out of hand quickly.

Do you think these marriage books are absolutely important? I'm sure most of them repeat some common concepts of the subject. Do you think that those common concepts are an absolute must know for anyone wishing to be married or already married?

advertising and sharing books to read from people who don't benefit from any way in the selling of the book are two different things.......geesh

I don't know about particular titles that solidify any success in marriage guarented , but I do think it's important to learn about marriage and what works, how to work through conflict, and how to communicate, how to fight fair, etc.... learn good skills and then put them into practice.....

No, I don't feel like they would be of any use to me.
Do they give you that fake vibe like they're written by people who just want to make money by stating the obvious or do you just feel that the bible alone is sufficient for marital advice?
I haven't made up my mind on them yet.

Just seems like a lot of common sense stuff to me. Communicate, listen, love, understand..blah blah blah. Yeah, I know, tell me something I don't know.

I've read The Five Love Languages (the original one is meant for married couples, though I've also read the singles edition). And I was part of a several week presentation of Love and Respect at my former church. The love languages book(s) was quite good and helpful to me in general relationships and in helping me in finding a compatible partner. Love and Respect was too focused on gender stereotypes to be especially useful for me.
