I just finished Unconditional? by Brian Zahnd. It's the best book on the subject of forgiving others I've ever read.
The book asks the question of whether we are called to forgive those who wrong us no matter what they've done. It also asks whether forgiving others does away with justice.
This isn't a book that just deals with forgiving minor annoyances. He starts out discussing the holocaust. He talks about something that happened to Simon Wiesenthal while he was a prisoner in the Nazi death camps. A Nazi soldier was dying and had become a Christian. He asked for Simons forgiveness. He couldn't forgive that person. Are we as Christians called to forgive on that scale? Are we able to?
Zahnd shows that forgiveness is foundational to the Sermon on the Mount and all that Christ taught.
It's definitely one of the 5 best books I've read outside the Bible. I strongly recommend putting this book on your short list and reading it soon.
