Anyone ever been to a boat naming and launching?

I was asked to perform the ceremony tomorrow and have no clue what a boat launching ceremony is...

Any ideas/insight?
i know you say some words about something.... and christen it.... or something like that.... and then you smash a bottle of alchohol on it's hull.... and then push it in the water.... and now it is a real legitimate boat....;)

i'll see if i can find better info....

i think it's kinda like a baby dedication.... to get GOD'S blessing....

historically it was to pronounce GOD'S blessing on it at the commencement of it's commission for service....

In Beaufort,S.C.,they have an annual Blessing of the Fleet(commercial fishing and Charter fishing boats) for a safe and prosperous season. In it they remember those lost at sea and the families.
It's quite a moving experience.

Remember, the boat will be unnamed until you "christen"it. You have quite an honor.

yep, i've been to a ship launching before. but it was a pretty big ship. a full sized carrier, to be exact. :)

lots of dignitaries were there, each remarking on the ship, who it was named after (in this case a former president of the US). but basically a launching is accompanied by prayers that all who sail in the ship be safe and preserved from harm, and that the ship itself perform well and be a sturdy ship.

for the naming part of the ceremony, it usually goes "I christen thee the (insert name here) and ask God's blessing on all who sail in her."

then you smash a breakable bottle against the hull to 'wet' her. and then the ship goes down the rails and into the water for the first time.

it's very much like a wedding, actually, only in this case you are marrying the crew (representing the groom) to the ship (the bride).:D (which is why a ship is always refered to as 'she'.
