I would stick with the ones that are chargable. Meaning u plus them into a USB jack and charge them from a wall plug. The battery operated ones are unreliable especially if the person is a long winded talker. I would stick with Motorolla.

Bluetooth earpieces should only be used in the car while driving. Anything else and you risk lookin like a Total Toolbag.

Please see:

He spends a lot of time on the road as part of his job so that is why I want to get this for him. Yes, I dated someone who always had the stupid thing clipped to his ear and when I think of him that is part of the picture.

The sunglasses condemnation I think is a bit harsh. I don't see what's wrong with having the cell clipped to the belt either. Unless the guy had a murse, where else is he supposed to put it?

I don't own Bluetooth stuff so I can't say from experience but I do work for a company that sells cell phones and accessories. I've noticed that most of the people in our stores recommend headsets made by a company called BlueTrek over Motorola. I guess it depends on the person. A lot of ppl where I work aren't big fans of Motorola's products. As for pricing, I'm not sure what the difference is...

Hahaha.... once again, I'm a victim of the power of suggestion.... the first time was a thread on burgers (I don't usually eat them but found myself having a craving after reading the thread)... and NOW, I bought a bluetooth today! Thanks to you all! LOL! Nah, actually I wasn't planning on it but there was one on sale reduced from 40 bucks to 15 bucks so I had to get my first bluetooth! My new toy! ..... and yeah, I won't be using it near leaf blowers, mine doesn't have that feature :( but love it nonetheless :)

Like was said before make sure you get a chargeable one, rather than one that uses batteries, usually they last a bit longer and also just a pet peeve of mine:

"Bluetooth" is not what the earpiece is called. It's called a Bluetooth Headset or Bluetooth Earpiece.

Bluetooth is a wireless information medium. I have a bluetooth mouse, and could get bluetooth speakers, or bluetooth headphones, or a bluetooth keyboard etc.

hehe hope that helps some people who aren't so tech-savvy :)

what model phone do they have? do you know what type of bluetooth it supports?

Make sure to get a model with an internal rechargable like has been mentioned, also look for a bluetooth 2.0 model if you can. they might cost a little more so you will have to weigh quality vs price but thats with anything.

some of the older models are still very good, including as was already mentioned the Jawbone, Motorola's (specifically the H700 or the HS850) or a Samsung wep200 (getting pretty cheap now they used to be around 100 but i've seen them for like 30-40) or even a blueant model

check here for reviews it has a listing of the ratings for the varios models http://reviews.cnet.com/4244-5_7-0.html?query=bluetooth+headset&tag=srch&target=

also you need to consider if the person you are purchasing this for wouldnt be better served with a bluetooth headset that supports A2DP which is a stereo bluetooth profile ... you can get headsets that will play music via a jukebox feature (now in most cellular phones) and then switch into a headset for phone calls whenever the need for incoming and outgoing calls comes in. This type of headset will cost a bit more though so you might want to stick with something simple ... depends on what your price range is really.

Just a little reminder:
There aren't different types of bluetooth. If it's bluetooth it'll work with any other bluetooth compatible device. It's like having a USB device plugged into your computer. Some older computers only have USB 1.0 while newer computers have USB 2.0. The newer computers can communicate at higher speeds, but they are interchangeable. just like Bluetooth, if you have an older Bluetooth 1.0-1.3 phone it will still work with Bluetooth 2.0 headsets. Likewise, a Bluetooth 1.0-1.3 headset will work with a bluetooth 2.0 Phone.

yes they will be compatible, but they will also not work as well. For instance if they have a phone that supports 2.0, they should get a 2.0 headset, this will increase clarity and range which are the two biggest complaint of any bluetooth user, otherwise they will not reach the full potential, of their phone, or headset. Also it should be remembered that while all headsets should be backwards compatible some models have inferior backwards compatibility and so the user will find more frustration than convenience in using the miss matched sets.

and for the record there is no such thing as bluetooth 1.3 there are 1.0 1.0b 1.1 1.2 2.0 and 2.1

here is another link with a detailed listing of the differences (via wikipedia) for anyone who might be confused about the technology http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth

I have this phone that plugs into my wall... I think it's called a telephone... Sometimes people call me, and I get to use it... Mostly it just sits there silently... Which is what I enjoy the most.
sounds interesting ... might i be able to interest you in some confusing and perhaps superfluous accessories ? I wont be satisfied until you can't use your phone properly. :)
