Blu-Ray uses a blue laser to read discs (As opposed to a regular DVD player which uses red) and thus it gets its name. Blu-Ray discs can store more information, up to five times more than a regular DVD disk. The wavelength of blue light is shorter than red so it allows for more information to be written and read on a disk.

Blu-Ray is farily new technology and eventually it WILL replace DVD, but for now its not widely known or used by the general consumer market because its still in early stages of getting known.

If you want to buy a Blu-Ray player, be prepared to spend for it. The latest model is 500 bucks roughly. Allthough some of the Blu-Ray players can play DVDs, not all can and I dont think that currently any DVD players will play Blu-Ray discs.

Most people think Blu-Ray is just annother type of DVD or a DVD maker.
