  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's expensive... but if your family line is prone to certain diseases, it may be worth it.

We donated to a cord blood facility in Florida. They sent us a box with all the sterile collection things inside (only to be opened by the doctor). It also included a pre-paid postage for Overnight delivery for after the baby was born and the collections were taken. We really didn't have to do anything~ the hospital sent it out, both times.

I probably won't donate this time though... I'm feeling pretty strongly (this time) that we need to let the cord stop pulsing before cutting it with this baby... which means the baby will get the cord blood.

You would probably have to fight in a hospital to wait to have the cord clamped and cut. I know when I gave birth in a hospital they didn't wait which seems silly to me since it's beneficial for the baby to receive as much of the cord blood as possible especially if their are complications. Most doctors/hospitals cut early for their own convenience. With my second I gave birth in a birthing center with a midwives and when I mentioned to them that I wanted the cord to stop pulsing before it was cut they were like oh we do that anyway. And they did wait even though I had a dramatic birth and was sitting on a midwife's lap :D

I want to be able to wait for the cord to stop pulsing too, but I have a feeling that it won't make the hospital staff too happy...:(

Never mind (I guess)..if all goes well this time and I have a successful VBAC, then I plan to have a homebirth next time. One day I'll get to do things the way I'd like them to be done. :sigh:

It's really more the Doctor's call than the hospital's call... If your doctor has approved a birth plan for you (which Can include 'waiting until the cord stops pulsing') than he/she will wait for it to stop pulsing.

I prefer to wait~ studies & articles I've read are showing that the baby Does need those cord blood cells for a variety of reasons, one of which is lowering the risk of jaundice. (Although being in sunlight is Great for that too.)

If you're donating or saving cord blood, then they'll clamp & cut the cord right away, then squeeze out the blood from the cut part of the cord immediately into the vials provided by the cord blood banking/donation center. It's really interesting to watch...
