  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

From James Bone in New York

A REPORT declassified by the United Nations yesterday contained a hidden bombshell with the revelation that inspectors have recently discovered an undeclared Iraqi drone with a wingspan of 7.45m, suggesting an illegal range that could threaten Iraq’s neighbours with chemical and biological weapons.

<B>US officials were outraged that Hans Blix, the chief UN weapons inspector, did not inform the Security Council about the drone, or remotely piloted vehicle, in his oral presentation to Foreign Ministers and tried to bury it in a 173-page single-spaced report distributed later in the day. The omission raised serious questions about Dr Blix’s objectivity. </B>

“Recent inspections have also revealed the existence of a drone with a wingspan of 7.45m that has not been declared by Iraq,” the report said. “Officials at the inspection site stated that the drone had been test-flown. Further investigation is required to establish the actual specifications and capabilities of these RPV drones . . . (they) are restricted by the same UN rules as missiles, which limit their range to 150km (92.6 miles).

Colin Powell, the US Secretary of State, told the Security Council in February that Washington had evidence that Iraq had test-flown a drone in a race-track pattern for 500km non-stop.

In another section of the declassified report, the inspectors give warning that Iraq still has spraying devices and drop tanks that could be used in dispersing chemical and biological agents from aircraft. “A large number of drop tanks of various types, both imported and locally manufactured, are available and could be modified,” it says.

The paper, obtained by The Times, details the possible chemical and biological arsenal that British and US Forces could face in an invasion of Iraq. The paper suggests that Iraq has huge stockpiles of anthrax, may be developing long-range missiles and could possess chemical and biological R400 aerial bombs and Scud missiles, and even smallpox.

Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary, told his fellow Security Council Foreign Ministers that the document was a“chilling read”.

General Powell resorted to reading passages from the paper out loud in the Council chamber. He pointed out that it chronicled nearly 30 times when Iraq had failed to provide credible evidence to substantiate its claims, and 17 instances when inspectors uncovered evidence that contradicted those claims. But his draft copy, dating from a meeting of the inspectors’ advisory board last week, did not contain the crucial passage about the new drone.

The decision by Dr Blix to declassify the internal report marks the first time the UN has made public its suspicions about Iraq’s banned weapons programmes, rather than what it has been able to actually confirm. “Unmovic has credible information that the total quantity of biological warfare agent in bombs, warheads and in bulk at the time of the Gulf War was 7,000 litres more than declared by Iraq. This additional agent was most likely all anthrax,” it says.

The report says there is “credible information” indicating that 21,000 litres of biological warfare agent, including some 10,000 litres of anthrax, was stored in bulk at locations around the country during the war and was never destroyed.

The paper, a collection of 29 “clusters” of questions for Iraq, offers some reassurance about Iraq’s missing botulinum toxin, which Unmovic believed is “unlikely to retain much, if any, of its potency” if it has been stockpiled since 1991.

Well, if you read the whole piece, it says:

US officials were outraged that Hans Blix, the chief UN weapons inspector, did not inform the Security Council about the drone, or remotely piloted vehicle, in his oral presentation to Foreign Ministers and tried to bury it in a 173-page single-spaced report distributed later in the day. The omission raised serious questions about Dr Blix’s objectivity. </B>

I am for eliminating Saddam as a threat to his own people. However, I do feel that Hans Blix has been forthright with the U.N.

But the whole premise of the inspectors has been skewed. The original job of the inspectors was to verify that the WMD were destroyed. It was never their job to find these weapons. Saddam was to give full disclosure and the inspectors would only verify their destruction.

Saddam is indeed in material breech of 1441.

Yesterday at 04:56 PM chickenman said this in Post #7 (http://www.christianforums.com/showthread.php?postid=700626#post700626)

I read the whole thing cenimo, and the title of the thread is still incorrect

I'm sure reporting the drone in written form must have challenged the literacy skills of the americans, but perhaps blix didn't think the drone was a big deal

a drone is not a missile and isn't designed to deliver payloads

they;re used for recon
Water tanks are NOT designed to be armored combat vehicles but that is how "tanks" got their name. During WWI armored tracked combat vehicles were shipped to Europe in crates labelled "tanks" to fool foreign spies. They did!

Domestic airliners are not missiles either. But anyone remember 9-11? They certainly did as much damage as a missile. I wonder if a remote piloted aircraft capable of carrying a payload of a thousand pounds or so, could be disguised as a reconnaisance drone? The aircraft is incapable of distinguishing between a payload of cameras, video and radio transmitting equipment, and fuel and a payload of WMD.

Here is some information about a similar "aircraft" used by the Germans during WWII, over 50 years ago. Note that the wingspan is 2 meters shorter than the Iraqi "drone" and also note the payload was over one ton. I believe that the literacy skills of Americans is quite good, as are their memories.

  • Fiesler Fi-103 (V1) Specifications

  • Engine: Argus pulse-jet
    600 pounds of thrust
    Length: 25' 4" (7.7 m)
    Wingspan: 17' 6" (5.3m)
    Weight: 4800 lbs. Fully fueled
    Fuel: 150 gallons of Acetylene gas
    1 mile per gallon
    Range: Approximately 160 miles from launch site
    Performance: Speed between 360-400 mph
    Flew at altitude of 2000-3000 ft
    Average flight time of 22 minutes
    Armament: 2337 pound war head

And remember, boys and girls, this technology is over fifty (50) years old. What could someone do with this and miniaturized electronics, etc?

I don't know if it's relevant, but as early as 2001 the US knew that Iraq was conducting experiments with Unmanned Aerial Vechiles, using the L-29, a plane that ceased production in 1974. Although I don't know if it's the same aircraft that Blix found. The research I've done seems to indicate that the US and the UK both knew about the attempts to make the L-29 an unmanned drone, and that in fact they have both struck at them in the past.

Again, these might not be the same planes as were indicated in the article, because I checked the wing lengths and they don't match up. Then again, Iraq does have a ton of them, was preparing them for that purpose, so it could be them.

http://www.fas.org/irp/threat/bian_jan_2002.htm#4

By the way, that news article seems to be written from a slight angle. I'd say it's a hair away from being a column, "The omission raised serious questions about Dr Blix’s objectivity.", "tried to bury it", and "A hidden bombshell" There's also no attempt to contact Hans Blix or someone to get the other side of the story. Is the Times always like this?

Editted to add:&nbsp; Is answering your own question like catching your own football pass?&nbsp;

Why yes, I'm willing to bet "The Times" is always like this, every day, every night.&nbsp; Their owned by News corporation, which for those of you not familiar with it, is&nbsp;code for Rupert Murdoch's company.&nbsp; The same company that brought you the Fox News Network, we report, you decide.&nbsp;

First, the thread title is misleading since the information was in the report submitted by Hans Blix. :confused: Second, the only thing this more than slightly biased article actually points out is that Hans BLix didn't feel it necessary to include the information in his Oral report to the UN. :rolleyes: If they wanted to know why Hans Blix didn't include the information in his Oral report, perhaps they should have asked?&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; No need for Hawks to worry though, we will invade Iraq and it will be in a matter of weeks. :sigh: The only purpose the whole weapons inspections program serves at this point is to give the world something to focus on; at this stage I doubt very seriously that American military action is linked to it in any way. Once we have our UN resolution, we are denied that resolution, or we get tired of waiting, we will attack. :sorry:

"A remotely piloted aircraft that the United States has warned could spread chemical weapons appears to be made of balsa wood and duct tape, with two small propellors attached to what look like the engines of a weed whacker."

"Latif said the plane is controlled by the naked eye from the ground. Asked whether its range is above the 93-mile limit imposed by the United Nations, he said it couldn't be controlled from more than five miles."

this is the one the UN inspectors saw anyway...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A17650-2003Mar12.html

The U.N. officials also said they were not sure whether the aircraft could exceed range restrictions or carry prohibited weapons. One official privately cast doubt on those possibilities, noting that the drone did not appear to have guidance and cargo technology sophisticated enough to do those things.

doesn't look like they can fly it more than 5 miles, let alone spray WMD.

The drone in question has a wingspan of nine meters. The plane in your picture is clearly not that large. And this is irrelevant to the fact that the Iraqi peole are suffering from inhumane treatment and subject to torture and oppression. As several Iraqi excitizens stated on TV, they want to be liberated from Saddam by the USA.

Its irrelevant, yes, but the outcry over Blix burying the report was started by US officials.

and I've read/watched accounts of Iraqi citizens/students who had AK-47s and were going to give American invaders a really warm welcome into Baghdad.

goes to show that there's always more than one point of view. Who really knows which is more prevalant in Iraq today? Even the Pentagon doesn't know if they will be welcomed as liberators or as invaders.
