  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Blessed with a First Class Relic....WOW

I got blessed with the ACTUAL bones of 11 of the Apostles! Our priest at our last RCIA class brought out the relic with bone fragments of the 11 original apostles.

He blessed us with it. He got it from the Pope's right-hand man in the Vatican years ago.

I was feeling really conflicted about my conversion (cold feet I guess) but now I feel great after the blessing.

My parents got this big time relic when my sister nearly died as a child. I cant remember the exact saint it came from. They used to keep it in a safe. When I was a kid, me and my brother would sneak in there--sometimes it was unlocked--no money was in there just papers and this relic, and look at it. It looked like old bones. I actually dont trust the validity of these relics. They were big business in the Medieval Age. Us NCCs dont believe in relics.

It looked like old bones.

If it was a "first class" relic, than chances are it was a bone fragment.

Second class relics are things that have been worn by the saint.

Third class relics are things that have been touched to the saint.

I actually dont trust the validity of these relics.

Why? Lemme guess... they're from Satan, right?

They were big business in the Medieval Age.

The Catholic Church has always, and I mean always, said that relics are never to be bought or sold.

I dont think they are from Satan. Just that they have no intrinsic power.

It would have been a first class relic. My sister was dying and my parents I believe knew a high ranking Catholic cleric. I have a second cousin who is a priest, maybe he got it for them. Im not sure.

I will have to check on whether relics were ever bought or sold. I thought they were at least during the Middle Ages if they are not now.

True relics are not bought and sold with Church approval. Con artists that hawked 'relics' to people in the Middle Ages are no different from the guy on the corner in NYC that tries to sell you a 'Rolex' for $20.

In fact anything that even carries a blessing is not approved for sale by the Church. My rosary, for instance. It has been blessed. I can give it away but I can't sell it. If I do sell it, it 'loses' the blessing.

Peace be with you. :)

Any time that someone recieves a wonderful blessing and spiritual strength from a Catholic sacramental, you can always count on Budge to throw cold water on it, because "we don't believe in that nonsense".

"And if *I* don't get a blessing out of it, then by God, I'll do my best to make sure nobody else does, either."

Thanks, Budge.

And of course, God can't work through them, either, right? He's limited in what He can really do, poor Guy. I mean, we all know He's powerful, but he's not that powerful. God, being able to work through a relic? Pfah! Ridiculous!

Spurious relics were sold during the Middle Ages, but never with Church approval. The act of selling a sacred object is simony, which is condemend by the Church.

Well I didnt want to get you upset but I dont believe these things hold intrinsic power. I am not a sacramentalist.

I wont post on it here since this isnt the debate board but maybe Ill post later too on this why Protestants dont believe in relics on the interdenom board.

Why would God *need* a relic to do working in someones life? This is a focus on the physical world.

Im glad they condemned it. Im glad you admit some sold them even if in sin and error.

Why would God *need* a relic to do working in someones life? This is a focus on the physical world.

Why would Jesus spit in some dirt, make it into mud paste and smear it on someone's eyes to restore their sight? Why would touching Jesus' clothing (or Peters or Pauls) heal someone without them assenting to it?

Im glad they condemned it. Im glad you admit some sold them even if in sin and error.

Why are you so glad he admitted it? Does this admission somehow validate some guilt by the Church itself? Since the word "simony" is a spin on the New Testament character "Simon Magus" who was guilty of doing these very things (though not selling a relic) it has been prevalent from the very beginning and is not a sign that the Catholic Church is somehow apostate.

Do you want to know something? I have an item that was blessed by the Pope. I had completely forgotten about it until I read your post, ZooMom. It's a photograph of Pope John Paul holding a baby in his arms and kissing him on the forehead. One of the Priests gave it to me in high school. It's not a recopied photograph, and I remember he said 'this photograph has been blessed by the Pope and I want you to have it, Michelle' I can't believe that I had forgotten I even have it. It was probably 1983 or something. Wow. I'm going to go dig that photo album out of the closet.
