Who here thinks that Black Sabbath was satanic ? Tony Iommi said that they were not, in a interview, and he said as for the album covers the record companys would do them, and that, they had no input into them. And he also said that people were asking them to join satanic cults and they would not do it. And he said that the most noted satanic cult worshiper, at that time in England, even asked them to join. He also said that the satanic cults were claiming, Black Sabbath to be just like them or their own. But Tony Iommi said that they were not. I still have that VHS tape. I am a Christian musician, I am a drummer. But I like Black Sabbath, I have seen the original group twice in the early 70's, I like the power of all that distortion, and I have learned from Bill Ward the drummer. But about 2 years ago I threw my Black Sabbath CD's away, because I was confused about them being satanic, even though I kept that VHS, tape because I forgot that I had it. I am now thinking that, why would Tony lie. Some Christians call just about everything satanic. I play alot of R&B type gospel my church we are mostly people of color, so we play mostly Black type gospel. But I am still very much into Metal, and Metal gospel is great. Metal music, Black Sabbath had the largest hand in. But the way I see it nothing is bad within itself, Romans 14:14. But man can take something and taint it. Like Metal he can take it and add satanic lyrics, just like what Marilyn Manson does, there by making the music satanic. God created people with different taste, some like hard rock some don't, some like Jazz or Fusion some don't. But you can take any musical genre and praise the Lord with it.
But back to Black Sabbath, what do you all think.

So they say they are not satanic right?

Well.. technically speaking they might not be.. but correct me if I'm wrong.. is there any of their songs worship God? Jesus?

If they do.. then they are not... if they don't.. well they might be. God is the only one worthy of judgement. However satan is a deceaver.. his messages are filles with lies and in no way you'll find truth on his acts.

The most important of this is setting your eyes to God.. and don't let this things pulling you away from God. Ask God what He'd like you to do.. who do you want to follow? Men.. or God. But instead of looking at who's satanic and who's not.. why not pray for them to find salvation and discover the grace of God?

If that is how you tell if a band is satanic or not by whether or not they sing about worshipping God or Jesus then that makes you an idiot! Just because they don't sing about doesn't mean that they don't do it! Hell i don't sing about and i believe in God and Jesus Christ! After all it's just music, if you don't like don't listen to it, i happen to like Black Sabbath and i will continue to listen to them and whoever else i damn well please! I listen to music because i like it not because of the groups or persons religious beliefs, quite frankly it's nobody's business but there own what or who they believe in! If they are or are not so-called satanic, who really cares! Although with the lead singer being OZZY OSBOURNE, you never know!

I once took the song " sweet leaf " to the pastor at a charasmatic church I was goig to and just gave him the lyrics. He said that it must be a inspirational christian who wrote it. Well, when I told him it was Black Sabath he about lost his mind and started ranting about how evil it was. Hmmm... how a song can change autors in the wink of an eye." Makes me wonder" Led Zep.

Is a tough one...I listen to black sabbath, and yes, to the untrained eye they seem satanic. But if u look past the imagary of the band(which is dictated to them), their music has some of the best riffs ever played, and the so called 'satanic' songs are actually warning about how the devil can taunt you. The song 'black sabbath' which was their first big hit could sound satanic, but its actually about to keep away from all things satanic. Geezer butler, their bass player was once interested in all that satanic stuff, and lots of bad things started happening to him, evil things visiting him in the night. He told ozzy about it and he wrote that song as a warning not to dabble with satanism.
And Latterain, from my experience, charasmatic churches can twist anything and everything to achieve the desired result, interesting what he said though.

Question: would a satanic band write lyrics like those in "After Forever" (from Master of Reality)?

Have you ever thought about your soul - can it be saved?
Or perhaps you think that when you're dead you just stay in your grave
Is God just a thought within your head or is he a part of you?
Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school?

When you think about death do you lose your breath or do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope - do you think he's a fool?
Well I have seen the truth, yes I've seen the light and I've changed my ways
And I'll be prepared when you're lonely and scared at the end of our days

Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say
If they knew you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
that God is the only way to love

Is your mind so small that you have to fall
In with the pack wherever they run
Will you still sneer when death is near
And say they may as well worship the sun?

I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ
I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced
Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don't believe?
You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can't retrieve

Perhaps you'll think before you say that God is dead and gone
Open your eyes, just realize that he's the one
The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate
Or will you still jeer at all you hear? Yes! I think it's too late.

Despite the band's dark image and personal excesses, I honestly don't think Sabbath were "satanic".

I had the same experience, except it was a teacher and the song was by TaTu :D

Black Sabbath was the first real heavy metal/rock band and alot of thier stuff seems to have been written just for fun rather than to make a real point. Neon Knights and The Wizard chief among them.

Ozzie was a little...twisted but I seriously doubt they were satanic.

I have no idea whether they were, are, or never were satanic. I think we should just let God take care of it. Remember we arent suppose to judge. I am a huge metal head myself (mostly christian metal now since i gave my life to christ). But I never really got that much into Black Sabbath. But I knew enough about what a huge impact they had on gettin the metal music alive and kickin. So I guess either way I would thank them for starting what they did. Otherwise we wouldnt have great bands such as Demon Hunter, Haste the Day, Still Remains, As I Lay Dying, etc. Metal has changed alot since sabbath too as you can tell by the different in sounds by todays metal bands.
