Brethren,
I have been noticing a little more buzz about this possible "pandemic", as the media calls it. Has anyone had a chance to research this at all? Does it pose as great a threat to the fabric of society as some people make it out to be?

Blessings,

-Davide

If the bird flu virus mutates to where it no longer passes only from bird to human but rather from human to human, then yes, we could be facing a potential pandemic which could take the lives of millions.

Many scientists think it is not a matter of if but when.

yes if it mutates ~ that is why Bush is doing things first hand to quaranteen as soon as it is suspected in one ~ also they found a parrot in europe infected with it. and 70% die if infected ~ that is why they are saying a pandemic ~ pray it stays low and soes not spread ~ thanks it is only in bird which cannot fly...

Davide, I'm not exactly a biomedical engineer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night! Actually, we've been looking at it in my Bio courses. Basically, think back to the Spanish Flu. Now, consider the fact that we're hopefully a little better prepared these days. I know for a fact that Canada has stockpiles of vaccines and mobile hospitals and I'm sure many other countries are preparing in similar ways just in case. The best way to deal with this pandemic is to prevent it in the first place... all of Bush's talk about quarantines and isolating parts of the country if the H5N1 strain were to make it over here is nonsense. It won't help. But as long as governments do what they can to stop the disease from spreading now (i.e. stop imports of chicken etc.), and get on top of having the necessary supplies to deal with outbreaks, it should be fine. But as was said in the previous post, it's really just up to God anyway I guess...

I doubt if George Bush will be able to do anything to stop the plague if it is God's will for it to be an epidemic.

yes I get my news online and this is what it said 1 week ago - I look at news all over the world - well at least we can try here to contain the spreading and pray to the all mighty one

Hmm

More than likely the Avian Bird Flu spawned in the dirty waters in the heavily populated enviroments of Thailand and China. It has something do with a microbe viral organism or bacterium.

Remember the SARS?

I praise God for giving me clean air and open spaces to breathe in.

It makes more sense to relocate and practice backcountry survival skills and wilderness trekking than to live in towering cities with heavy populations.

But we can pray for protection.

Actually it's quite true. The parrot was in quarantine in Britain after being imported but died before it was cleared to officially pass into the UK. Since the bird was never officially allowed in, the British government is claiming that it does not affect their "disease-free status". You can probably find the press release on the British Government's website.

I guess it's better to believe everything we read on the internet than to use our minds. There aren't any wild parrots in Europe and the flu is transmitted from bird to bird, it doesn't just float around in the air. A parrot in Europe would have to be a house pet, which would be caged indoors at this time of year, and would have no contact with wild birds. It's highly unlikely that a parrot in Europe is the first case of bird flu.

Then the system is working and this is not a case of bird flu on the loose, is it?

Think about that for a second. It was in Britain when it died/had the disease. Just because the UK government says it wasn't in the UK officially doesn't mean it wasn't in the UK period. Someone had to get rid of the body, at some point ot must have come into contact with other birds or maybe someone on a loading dock. The system isn't working -- it's ridiculously flawed.

You don't understand the UK's quarrantine system. You can't even take a dog into the country without a six month stay in isolated quarrantine. Birds undergo a one-year quarrantine. This bird was kept isolated, and if it was a new import, it couldn't have been there more than a few days, since the flu has a one week incubation period before symptoms start to develop. And they don't just toss the bird in the trash, they have a strict system for maintaining isolation during its sanitization and disposal. Instead of just spouting off because you don't like me, check your facts.
