  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Billy’s Christmas Present

It was Christmas Eve. The house was all decorated for Christmas, but to six-year-old Billy it did not seem much like Christmas. Not only were there no presents under the tree, but this was Billy’s first Christmas without his dad. He tried to remember that his dad had gone to be with Jesus, but that did not always give Billy the comfort he needed. His mother tried to comfort him, but she was lonely and hurting just as he was, only she tried not to show it in front of Billy.

Billy’s mother did not know how to explain to Billy that Santa could not come this year, but she did her best. Still, Billy had trouble understanding why this year, of all years, Santa would not be coming when Billy needed him the most. Billy’s mother tucked him in bed and he did his best to go to sleep, but the moisture on Billy’s pillow gave evidence that he was struggling with his predicament.

When he awoke the next morning, Billy bounded from his bed hoping that somehow, some way, Santa came anyway, but he came to an abrupt halt as he stared at the emptiness below the tree. He was still standing there when he felt his mother’s hand on his shoulder and he turned around too quickly for her to hide her tears.

“I’m sorry, Billy,” she said as she gave him a big hug.

“It wasn’t you fault. Santa was the one who didn’t come.”

“Come here, Billy. Let’s sit down and I’ll read you the story of Jesus’ birth.”

Billy had become used to hearing the story of Jesus’ birth on Christmas morning, but before it was always his dad who read it.

“Come on, soldier. I’m going to fix you a special breakfast,” she said after they had read and discussed the story.

This made Billy perk up and forget all about the lack of presents. Of course, Billy would have liked presents like all the other kids, but he wanted his dad more than anything.

As Billy and his mother tried to decide what to do after breakfast, they heard a knock at the door. They wondered who it could be, especially at this time on Christmas morning. Billy was pretty sure Santa never came this late.

Billy ran to the door anyway, arrived before his mother and threw the door wide open. Standing there was a stranger. No one Billy had ever seen.

“Are you Billy?” the stranger asked.

Billy stood there wondering how this stranger knew his name.

“Uh, yeah,” Billy answered. “How do you know my name?”

Billy was so startled that it took him a while to notice the young man carried a present under his arm, a present wrapped in shiny red paper. By this time, Billy’s mother had gotten to the door.

“Hi, I’m Josh. I’m Billy’s Big Brother. I just found out who my Little Brother was last night and almost didn’t have time to get him a present. Here, Billy. This is for you.”

“Come on in, Josh. I’m Laura, Billy’s mother. Let me take your hat and coat.”

Billy was excited. When he saw nothing under the tree again this morning, he had figured there was no way he was getting anything for Christmas. Billy tore through the paper and ripped open the box as quickly as possible. Inside he found a football.

“A football! Gee, thanks!” shouted Billy.

“You’re welcome, Billy. Do you like it?” Josh asked.

“Like it, it’s awesome! My old one got run over by a car. Wait til Jason hears about this.”

“Billy, do you know what a Big Brother is?” Josh asked.

“You mean like B.J.’s big brother?” Billy asked Josh.

“No, not that kind. There is an organization called Big Brothers where guys volunteer to spend time with boys who don’t have a father and I will be your Big Brother,” Josh re-plied.

“You mean you will come over sometimes and spend time with me and do things together?” Billy asked.

“That’s right, Billy.”

“Boy, wait til I tell Jason that I got a Big Brother for Christmas. Hey, Josh. Could we maybe go outside now and toss the ball around?”

“Sure, if it’s okay with your mom.”

“It’s okay with me, Billy, but you have to dress warm.”

“Aw, mom. It’s not that cold. Anyway it’s hard to throw the ball around with a lot of stuff on.”

Billy and Josh played for quite a while, although Billy could have played even longer. When he went to bed that night Billy thought about his new friend and his football. It seems that Santa came after all, or was it Jesus?
