  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Biggest loser on CF.....

My roadwork these days consist of Bruce Lee style running, no less than 6 miles, and alternating all out sprints on the runs and then regular pace, and then more sprints, then back to regular pace.. fills up my lungs with air quite nicely.

Yes, I did sweat. I don't appreciate put downs that are disguised as jokes.

20 minutes is a good workout if you don't have much time and have to get somewhere, you want to spend more time to maximize the effect, not trying to put you down.

You could have just said that, then. "Did you even break a sweat?" does not convey the same message as "a longer workout will maximize the effect".

I am able to do 60 minutes on the elliptical at the highest level of resistance. I have not been doing as long of workouts lately because I am busy with school and other things in my life, but I have still managed to drop a dress size and lose some weight even though my workouts have not been taking as long recently.

I thought I'd throw this in here just for giggles...

At the gym on Wednesday, I see this guy come in dressed out in full workout apparel. Skinny as a rail. Anyway, he walks over to one of the weight racks, picks up a 5lb. plate, goes over in front of the mirror and begins swinging the plate in the same motion as if he were swinging a golf club.

He does this for about 10 minutes, puts the plate back, and walks out the door...

For the longest time, I've thought about writing a coffee table book that showcases the many different "gym personas" I've witnessed over the years...

1. set treadmill inclne to 15%+

Often when I am busy I go down to just 20 minute cardio sets (3ish times a week). Last week I didn't even make that, as I was super busy until Friday, and than I traveled up to DC to hang out with friends. I might get to the gym tomorrow, but likely I won't get back to exercise (and eating right) until Wednesday.

How do I figure out how much protein I need per day to lose weight and build muscle? I have about 45 pounds to lose still. It seems like low carb, high protein, helps build muscle better. I think sometimes I don't eat enough, and other times I overeat. I'm not really into heavily counting calories, because that's too hard to be a "lifestyle", but I am willing to do it temporarily.
I fell off the diet bandwagon last week. Only went to the gym once, but I did do Pat Tillman's walk 4.2 miles on Saturday. I am hitting the gym for my normal routine this week 5 days. I need to somehow make sure I am eating enough, but not overeating cuz I really need to lose this weight!

Weight lifters often try to get body weight in lbs for their amount of protien. So for example, I would try to get 175 (bad week ) grams of protien.

This is sort of the height, and should be roughly 33% of your calories. The people who tell you to go for 50% of your calories are crazy (so trainers at my gym tell me). To be honest, even trying I don't get 33% most days. I do try to get over 20%, which would correspond ot .7 * (body weight in lbs).

That sounds like way too much protein for me. I'm not a body builder. So by 33 percent or 20 percent are you talking about 33 percent of your body weight which would be about 58 grams?

33% is extreme, and the 20% or 33% is in relation to calories. Remember a lot of things have 5% or something, that you wouldn't even think of. So for someone on a 2000 calorie diet, 20% would be 400 calories of protein. There are 4 calories in a gram of protein, so you would want 100 grams of protein.

Thanks Jon, but that is just way too much math to have to do LOL. In order for this lifestyle change to work for me....it can't be so complicated. I'm just gonna try to go low carb, more protein, and no sugar and very little fat AND try to get enough calories in a day that my STUPID body doesn't think it's in starvation mode lol. Somewhere I read you should eat the amount of calories that you want to weigh x 10. I don't know if that's true or not, but it sounds about right for me. Also my personal trainer told me not to eat fruit..he says its overrated and has too much sugar when you are trying to lose weight, so that's what I'm gonna do...listen to my trainer.

BTW...I lost 2 more pounds as of yesterday. Hopefully I can keep it off.

well, I might just be addicted to lifting weights.

I've been off the weights and doing just cardio (between 400-900 cals a day) for most of April.

I was 224 when we started the thread, 214.5 at my low, but mostly in a range of 215-218.

I'm happy with the fat loss but I'm not sleeping like I do when I lift.

So I did chest tonight. Same routine as usual but I threw in a curve ball on the dumbell presses.

Instead of doing incline, decline and flat bench (starting at 45lbs each arm, adding 5 lbs each time I started the set of three) I did 45 on one hand, 50 on the other, alternating arms with each change of the incline.

Set two was 50/55, set three was 55 each. Just trying to switch it up and throw in a few "oh crap!" moments to mess with the body.

Oh, and I took a que from the article I posted about challenges and bought some cold-milled flax seed at Costco. A 40 oz (lol 40 oz lol) tub was under $10.00, and two tbsp adds 70 cals of fiber (4 grams), Omega 3 (2,700 mg), and Lingens (whatever they are) without changing the taste of the protein shake.

So the exercsie routine evolve to cardio in the mornings, weights in the afternoon. Skip cardio the mornign after a leg workout.

Then the usual attempts at improving the diet.

I tried the no fruit thing, and found that I didn't feel as good. It is true though that fruit is high in sugars (healthy sugars, but sugars aren't too good for weightloss period). The recommendation is to have that sort of stuff before exercising, so a couple times a week have a banana or something before you hit the treadmill.

Additionally, remember to take a multi-vitamen.
