  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Two more special election wins by republicans tonight. The dems were hopeful. But it makes me wonder two things:

1) When will the dems realize they can't just throw money at something and make it work? instead of calling us racist, maybe talk to us. Try to understand us.

2) People are still in support of Trump. Polling is way off and regularly wrong. When Karen Handel mentioned Trump tonight, they were screaming with delight and chanted his name. They cheered louder for Trump than for her!

It was a big day for Republicans, in spite of their 36% president. They took a seat that went 60-40 last time, as has been Republican since Gingrich held it. Trump is a huge drag on the ticket, but the Democrats still don't have a coherent unified message.

I also used to be afraid of the boogeyman. I grew out of it though.

I'm going to disagree. Liberal policies actually are fairly popular when they get communicated. Too often the Democrats do not spend time actually talking about what they want to do. Sanders is the first person that I can remember in a long time that spent time on the campaign trail mostly talking about what he wanted, not about how bad his opponent was. The fact that he isn't actually a Democrat isn't lost on me.

I'm a little lost in the intracacies of your elections...

Aren't these traditionally two very 'red' districts...? Weren't they won by something like 25%+ in an election only 7 or 8 months ago...?

So what happens next election in those seats that were only won by 5-10% last time...?

This is a big night.....??

The Democrats need to start, nationally, putting forth what their plans are. "Donald Trump sucks" doesn't work, clearly.

Except that wasn't Ossoff's approach, was it? I understand that he hardly mentioned Trump...?

They're angry every night, aren't they? The party has largely become a collection of people who love to hate.
I'm really getting tired of the narrative that Democrats are fueled by nothing but irrational hate. I don't think it's hard to look at what's going on and see why the concern. ...ignoring climate change as policy as it scorches the southwest, the dismantling of the national parks, a health care bill done in stealth mode, little concern for public health, promises of jobs, but no support of the public education that prepares people for these jobs, selling arms to Qatar and Saudi Arabia, some very unqualified cabinet members and many more serious. In my opinion, with the possible exception of the air strike against Assad, I haven't yet seen a positive action taken by this administration.

My state's special election was last month when Gianforte won by a larger margin despite his assaulting a reporter and then lying about it. So, I've been a bit disheartened and didn't look at what kind of policies were discussed in thsee two races, but I think that in the national election Sanders, and Clinton perhaps to a lesser extent, laid out proposed policy.

Two more special election wins by republicans tonight. The dems were hopeful. But it makes me wonder two things:

A few points to make here -

This is an area that has gone Republican for about 40 years. A few years back folks would have thought you were talking out of your behind if you'd told them that a Democrat close to half the age of a Republican would be neck and neck.

The Dem candidate is a kid in comparison to the Republican. The Rep, Karen Handel, is 25 years older than her opponent. 25 years. 25 years more experience than the Dem, Jon Ossoff. This wasn't was all down to Dem. vs. Rep. Some folks actually do think about things such as qualifications instead of their feelings, or their party.

I'm a Republican from Georgia and have mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand I want the party to succeed, on the other I want them to do so with integrity. I see that lacking. No, I don't care about what the Dems have said or done, that's on them. I want the party I'm a registered part of to clean up its act. The Republicans spent plenty on this campaign, and they used straight-up dishonesty as a part of it. They made this ad using a voiceover of Obama that was ripped way out of context, it came from an audiobook he'd made and was a story from the 80s or so. The Republicans twisted it all around. That disgusted me.

1) When will the dems realize they can't just throw money at something and make it work? instead of calling us racist, maybe talk to us. Try to understand us.

Well, again, I'm a Republican. I don't have your complaint. Maybe because I actually talk to Dems with respect. I listen to them. I don't go out there and gloat in their face. I don't make it all personal, and get personally offended when somebody criticizes Trump or Republicans. I don't make everything about party. I look at the facts of it.

As for the racism, I fully understand why folks think that, because there's a lot of truth to it unfortunately. For one not enough of them repudiate Trump's racism. More than that, far too insist he's not & defend him, when he's acted indefensibly.

And 2 it's just a sad fact that a lot of Republicans ARE racist. I grew up in an area where there were racist signs out in public "joking" about the black man in the White House. Edit, I don't even want to go into all of what was said about Obama.

2) People are still in support of Trump. Polling is way off and regularly wrong. When Karen Handel mentioned Trump tonight, they were screaming with delight and chanted his name. They cheered louder for Trump than for her!

This wasn't about Trump. Now I know he will make it all about Trump because the man makes everything about himself. But no duh, people are still in support of Trump. A lot of folks have made this so personal that cheering for him, that's basically cheering for themselves. You've got folks who are full-on apologists for the man, who do not care what he's done that's unbiblical, unethical, flat-out stupid, he's their man, will defend him to the ends of the earth. There's been plenty of horrible politicians in history who've managed to keep their loyal following.

Well said. If all in your party (especially it's leadership) were as fair-minded as your comments indicate, your nation as a whole would not suffer from the fracturing that threatens it currently...
