  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Joe Biden will deliver remarks on his nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the supreme court at 2pm ET today, the White House has just announced.

Kamala Harris will also be in attendance for the event, during which Jackson is also expected to deliver remarks of her own." Link

That's a mistake I think. I think she would make a good justice, but she has also participated in several high publicity cases where she has ruled against the Trump Administration. Republicans are probably going to be screaming for her head.

I'm not sure that really matters, as it appears almost all Republican Senators are likely to vote against here anyway. We seem to be to a point where approval of Supreme Court nominees is no longer on their qualifications and, instead, is now made largely on party lines.

But even the Republican senators who wouldn't oppose a Biden nominee on reflex might have a problem with somebody that can be spun as being partisan. Considering the rant Justice Kavanaugh went on against the Democratic Party during his confirmation it would be laughable and rank hypocrisy, but that hasn't stopped them in the past.

It doesn't matter that Republicans are going to be screaming for her head. BTW, every Supreme Court justice except Thomas (whose wife is reported to have been very supportive of the insurrection) said that Trump's records relevant to 1/6 should be released to the Congressional committee. Are they screaming for their heads, too?
Democrats need 50 votes plus Harris' tiebreaker. They will get that.
Thomas should resign, or, preferably, be impeached. Way back in the 19th century a Supreme Court justice was impeached. I wonder if he has had as many serious conflicts of interest as Thomas has had in his tenure.

I think Brown-Jackson is a fine addition to our supreme court. It is beginning to resemble a true representation of America. I found Graham's comments amusing. He was only in favor of Biden nominating a black lady if the nominee was Childs, the woman from South Carolina. Hyper partisanship is a growing problem in our government.

What's even more laughable about Graham is he complains about nominees being from Harvard and Yale... didn't seem to have that problem with Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. I wish someone would tell these people to sit down, the hypocrisy is just sad now. I wonder if we will hear the next racist line of attack with claims that she is not qualified?

Republicans will naturally be against anyone that:
The Democrats put forth
Has slavery ancestory
Has brown or darker skin

What does it matter what the Republicans think? Dems have the majority in the House and the Senate.

Thomas should be impeached yes, but he judges on Republican party lines and so no Republican will support his impeachment.

I would love to see Thomas off of the Supreme Court also, but if we could not convict Trump in his impeachment, there is no way that we could succeed with Thomas. I would suggest sending him paid gift certificates from various fast food restaurants instead. McDonalds, KFC, Taco Smell, I mean Bell.

RNC Chief McDaniel Rips Biden's SCOTUS Pick

RNC Chief McDaniel Rips Biden's SCOTUS Pick

She wrote: "Maybe the only promise Joe Biden has kept is his pledge to nominate a liberal, activist judge to the Supreme Court. Ketanji Brown Jackson is exactly that: a radical, left-wing activist who would rubberstamp Biden's disastrous agenda."

And in a statement released by the RNC, she added: "By picking Jackson, Biden put far-left special interest ahead of defending Americans' rights and liberties. The Republican National Committee will make sure voters know just how radical Jackson is and remember at the ballot box in November."

Democrats have the majority in the Senate, counting one senator who almost fetishes bi-partisanism and has voted against key portions of Biden's agenda.

Why should the only current black person on the SCOTUS be impeached? Don't black people deserve no representation?

I have no issues with his colour or race, just is far right ideology. He seems to be the lone dissenter at times.

Well, isn't that because he's a black man and is representing a unique point of view, which is also the argument being made in favor of biden's choice of exclusively a "black woman"? Black men who are conservative deserve representation on the court as well.

He also doesn't seem to believe in precedent, which alone is reason for him to be removed imo.

I'd be interested to know, at those times that he was going against all the other justices, what did the black community at large think, were they feeling that he was representing the black community?

Oh, I definitely think SCOTUS should have black representation. I'm fully supportive of Biden seeking black candidates. I just don't assume that all black people are the same and that all are qualified and representative of the black community. Thomas as an individual is very problematic, his ideology seems to trump his obligation to society and the constitution.
