  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is a difficult one. Some translations say adultery which could be different to fornication. Perhaps if you are comfortable could you share why you are asking.
I will say that there will be many different views on this topic and so you will probably have to work out for yourself what is right.

For me there is enough evidence to cast doubts on the way original texts have been translated which means we can not make hard and fast declarations.

The Bible lists several grounds for divorce. Jesus was asked about a specific situation that was being debated in the 1st century dealing with the interpretation of
Dt.24:1. So to make Jesus' words that fornication was the only grounds for divorce is to take what Jesus said out of its historical context.
this has been understood by scholars since the 1850s and can be found in good commentaries, but still is often ignored by preachers who like to preach judgement on people.

What we know Jesus said about divorce comes n Matthew 19. 8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

If you have other teaching from Jesus about divorce, please share it. I think it should be permitted in cases of abuse, addiction (where the partner loves the drug more than the spouse) or long term incarceration where one has deliberately violated the law and has thus removed themselves from the marriage.

Ex.21.10f: If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, or her marital rights. And if he does not do these three things for her, she shall go out for nothing, without payment of money.

All Jews of Jesus considered this verse as giving 3 reasons that a person could divorce his spouse. Paul is speaking from this context when he talked in 1 Cor.7 about a believer who is abandand isn't under any obligation.
