  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I had originally posted this thread in Singles (as a spin-off of a discussion happening in another thread), but thought non-Singles posters might be interested in the topic.

What translation(s) do you prefer and why? Which translations do you dislike and why?

Adding a poll, with multiple choice, because polls are fun. :D

NRSV (specifically the New Oxford Annotated with Deuterocanon), because it reads more naturally to me and the footnotes aren't trying to push theology I deeply disagree with.

I haven't formed much of an opinion on ones I don't like, except for The Message - every time I've heard something quoted from it, it either sounds weird (as in, very awkwardly worded), or like it's trying too hard to be 'relevant', and that the 'relevant' parts seem to go hand-in-hand with the kind of hipster-esque nonsense I just get annoyed by.

I started off with the NIV when I became a Christian. I went to a Christian bookstore and told them I wanted a Bible, but that I was a little overwhelmed :D They helped me pick out the Quest Study Bible. I have acquired other versions since then, including the KJV.

I was raised on the KJV, but, along with most of my family, I have tended toward the NIV for everyday reading or such. Just a little easier to go through or explain meaning to people.
But the KJV has a place, and it is so much more eloquent in places - it is certainly invaluable for that very fact.

NIV for casual reading, because it uses simple, modern language and interprets some passages within context for the reader.
NASB for study, since it has the most precise translation, with very little addition of idiomatic expressions. This allows for me to do language studies on certain passages more easily, since it is more direct than the NIV.

I use NIV mainly, simply because it's easy to read and that's what I have a concordance for.

Normally, I would say that the The Message/NLT are my least-liked Bible versions, but I ran into one I disliked a lot more- The Manga Bible, put out by Zondervan (makers of the NIV). Check out their story of Adam and Eve- http://www.zondervan.com/media/samples/pdf/0310712874_samptxt.pdf

I mainly read the two latest Finnish translations (right now more the one from 33/38), but if I want to do some language study or compare then I'd most likely use the NIV, which I find easiest to read... From what I've read from the ESV it seems wonderful too though, so that might be the next exploration I'll do. :)
