  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have been to mass several times when I've visited with family members (to learn about catholicism) and at times at the weddings of friends. I have noticed that on Sunday there is never a Bible study before hand. This is currently something that I am trying to decide if should be done by anyone - so I'm not trying to flame you all for not having one :)

Why is this? Do you believe that there is no authority for one in the Scriptures? Why? There are Bible studies on different days, so what's the difference?

I look foward to hearing from you.

Regarding authority...

There is authority in God's Word, yes, but God's Word must be interpreted through the Church Jesus set up on St Peter. As the Bible itself says, the Church is the pillar and foundation of the truth.

Regarding Bible study...

This is usually done by groups of laity within the Church, in my experience. It doesn't happen before or after Mass, in my experience.

Regarding use of the Bible...

We go through readings of the ENTIRE Bible on three-year cycles every day at Mass.

I tend to read it at night before bed...thats about the only time when my kids arent competing for attention. :)

The other key thing to point out is that our focus is not on the Bible on Sundays.

Our focus is on our Lord Jesus Christ and his sacrifice in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist.

The Bible readings are a tool to point us toward our Lord

Theres plenty of time for Bible Studys the rest of the week. :)

All authority is by our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave authority to His Apostles, to The Church.

"There is a time and a place for everything." (Indeed, we should have the time to study the Bible.)

Holy Mass is the living scriptures, in that we don't study scriptures during Mass; we LIVE the scriptures during Mass.

Do the saints in Heaven study the Bible?

This is what my question was really based on. I get the idea when reading through the Bible that when the saints came together on the first day of the week they're focus was to partake in the Lord's Supper. In Acts 20:7 it talks about when they had come together to break bread. In 1 Corinthians 11, again, it seems like the reason they were coming together was to partake of the Lord's Supper.

Is this how most of you feel? Does anyone know what the catechism says on the subject? or maybe some of the older writings?

Thank you all so far for all of your responses :)

Yes, we go to Mass for the Eucharist mainly. But like I said, we also have the Liturgy of the Word where we hear the Bible read aloud.

Masses inlcude one or two readings from the Bible outside the Gospel and Psalms (one on weekdays, two on Sunday), a reading from the Psalms, and a reading from the Gospels. These readings are from a three year cycle that ensure that a large portion of the Bible is heard by those who go to Mass. After the Gospel reading, the pastor gives a sermon on the readings of the day. In addition to these readings, much of the liturgy of the Mass is taken from the Bible. The Bible is very important to Catholics.
