I found it useful to do word searches using bible software, or even google. I studied works like "Love, faith and hope", and other things i was interested in. IT helps you zero in on those topics better. I also find the new testament better for my study of Gods will for the Christian. The Gospel of Mathew and John, along with all the New Testament letters have helped me a lot. I find that Psalms has greatly helped with my depression because it helped me see that David had his struggles too. Proverbs helps me as well, although they can be hard to read at first, at least for me they were because i felt rebuked by them so often, but it helped me grow i think. The whole bible is useful, but if you are looking for Gods will for the Christian, study the New testament first, they were written as instructions to the Church. Be careful though, be mindful that some things might be difficult to understand at first, because there is some spiritually symbolic language that echoes Revelation. However the commands are pretty clear. In my opinion.

There is a general Bible study designed for new believers available at the site: www.biblecounsel.net, which is called: W.O.T.S. - Word Of Truth Study (based on KJV). There is no cost and one can ask questions there about it.

I like both inductive and thematic. *ducks*

Both are good. Inductive stresses context of the passage you are reading right then. However, not every passage on say, faith, explores the whole topic. You'll read good things about it in one book, and it will leave you with questions that are dealt with in another book completely. Thematic attempts to address the issue as a whole, bringing the various passages together to teach you about the subject. My understanding has been shaped by the teaching of the issue as a whole, followed by more detailed examination of the components.

The most important aspect to studying the scriptures is really a matter of the heart. We need to love the truth, and hold it in very high regard, if we are to embrace and understand God's Word because Jesus said, "Your Word is truth."

In doing so, we will be willing to cast aside any belief or inclination that opposes the truth, even if it means casting aside ideas we've embraced our whole lives and that the world pressures us into thinking.

Aside from that, spending lots of time in the Word will give us a knowledge base that the Holy Spirit can begin to teach us from because many doctrinal truths are found spread out over the Bible.

If you want to understand one part of God's Word, it can help to know other parts of His Word that are related.

Paul said, "Think on these things, God will give you understanding."

Having a wide knowledge of the scriptures and thinking about God's Word is an excellent approach.

Finally, "Jesus said, "You receive not because you ask not."

If you've got questions, ask Father God in the name of Jesus and He will eventually teach you. Just be patient, because knowing that knowledge is a part of the learning process you may need to come across other parts of the scriptures that flesh out doctrines for the Holy Spirit to teach you clearly.

I've asked questions that were answered almost immediately. I've also asked questions that took 5 years to get an understanding of because of the amount of familiarity I needed for the Holy Spirit to teach me.

Also, don't presume anything is true until it's clear in the scriptures. Holding a high standard for truth will position you to learn more.
