The commentary set I would love to own, but just copy information out of from Marist's library is the New Interpreters Bible. They have the NIV here. It's the Bible and a commentary in one. But it's like 10 volumes or something...and seriously expensive. Though there is supposed to be a CD-Rom version that's in the $60's pricewise.

I do own a Matthew Henry Commentary. And that one is pretty good...and easy to understand. :)

Hi there!

My preference in commentaries is John Gill because he uses the various manuscripts from Greek and Hebrew and compares them to get the better understanding of what the text means. His work is from the 1700's but I find it to be just as current today. He pastored the Metropolitan Tabernacle the century before Charles Spurgeon became their noted speaker.

If you are looking for life application, he isn't for you. If you are looking for the best interpretation of text based upon manuscripts and history, he's your man.

Of course, there are others who are great... Matthew Henry, Adam Clarke, ... most can be found online at crosswalk.com or studylight.org.

Another excellent text is the 3 volume set The Explanation of the New Testament - by Blessed Theophylact, Archbishop of Ochrid and Bulgaria Translated from the original Greek text by Fr. Christopher Stade

Each volume is a commentary of the The Gospel according to
  1. St. Matthew
  2. St. Mark
  3. St. Luke

St. John is still being translated into English
