I just read a post in the Messianic Jewish forum (where I am not permitted to post) saying that a Bible code expert has determined that Obama is the punishment of America.

I do not believe in Bible Codes, but I'd like someone to convince me I'm wrong. Anybody out there?

I have heard of the bible codes personally I don't have the understanding to decipher them in order to find out if they are real or not but as for obama it is not certain the only thing I know is that it's odd that Jesus spoke his name when he said He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
If I recall lighting in hebrew is baraq from is o and heaven is boma

I can't do it... while I find them intriguing, and wouldn't put it past God to conceal something like that (there is a verse that could be used to support that notion) the truth is... we can make any book say anything. I believe Shakespeare was once used to test out the code and things were found within his writings. So, I remain opened minded but I too need convincing, and it better be good! :)

Agreed... Obama's first name has a meaning... just as anyone elses does. It is believed that 25% of the male children born in Judea in the first century were named Yeshua. Anyway... this "barack" thing has been going around since the primaries before the 08' elections. Nothing new... I remember when Reagan was elected, Ronald (6) Wilson (6) Reagan (6).... he was it.... 36 years ago. :) We need to judge by fruit, not by anything else, it just causes trouble! ;)

I'm an expert on codes. If they are in the Bible, one would assume that they have a specific purpose. I, personally, would be looking for code-breaking tools in scripture, as well. There's enough confusion among Christians --- we don't need codes.

I don't believe in the "Bible codes" as they're presented in the usual fashion. But I'm willing to say that I wouldn't be at all surprised if there is some form of sophisticated mathematical coding in the Bible through the use of the letter/number correspondence inherent in the languages.

The actual truth about the Bible codes was finally revealed by statistical analysis: they are not confined to the Pentateuch; they are found everywhere -- ELS codes are found with approximately equal frequency in the Book of Genesis, the Qur'an -- Islam's holy book, Tolstoy's "War and Peace," or in any sufficiently long text written in any language.

So, on a bad day, one of my verbose rants might contain such codes as to reveal previously unknown gnostic insight??

Look up pareidolia. Also the guy who used the Bible Code generator to score more positive hits with Moby Dick than the Bible.

Sorry, given the variations in the spelling and words (400,000 variants and growing in then NT manuscripts alone) bible code couldn't possibly work.

By couldn't possibly I don't mean slim probability. I'm talking square circles here.

Similarly, if one looks at the standardization of the OT that took place in the late first century and early second century in order to produce the Masoretic text. Then compare that to Septuagint readings found in the Qumran (Dead Sea scrolls) we find many differences, least of which is several generations of change in the Hebrew language.

Imagine Middle English of 500 years ago vs now. Now double or triple the differences.

Bible, codes are for those who are happily ignorant of how the scriptures came together, the nature of the revelation, the fact that God empowered man to share in that revelation making it a divine/human revelation.

No codes!

Just hard exegetical work to get to what the original audience wood have understood.

For those still unconvinced, and to stop disrespecting God's revelation by misrepresenting it, see:

Thank you all. One of the links in this article is what I was going to post. The nature of the Hebrew language is such that you can find a code in anything. Works for any consonantal language with a short root stem, hence for the Koran also. In other words,t he codes are just a big coincidence. A little math proves you can find almost any headline in any paper at any point of history this way. There are simply enough letters int he Torah, and the rearrangements in Hebrew are enough, that more words than humans ever want to use can be made of any writings in them. So if you look hard enough you can find anything you like in there.

I'm kind of not surprised. Or is this a fish story?
