  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

i know the order of the OT books in most protestant bibles are not in the same order as they appear in a jewish bible, (eg. genesis - chronicles) but can someone tell me why?

also i heard recently that our new testament is also not in the earliest running order accepted.

Can anyone shed any light on these two questions?

Steve

The Hebrew Bible is arranged into three sections: Torah, the books of law, Nevi'im, the books of prophecy, and Ketuvim, the books of writings. This order was disrupted when the Tanakh was translated into Greek, from 285 BC, to create a document known as the Septuagint. The Protestant Bible is designed after the Septuagint in terms of book order. There are a few other differences: the Christian Bible splits Chronicles, Kings, and Samuel into parts 1 and 2 (or describes Samuel and Kings as Kingdoms 1-4) and the Minor Prophets into separate books, where in the original texts they were unified.

Any question of book order (and number) is complicated- there have been many versions, many decisions, and different sects of Christianity use different book orders.
