  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Oh Goodness, my boyfriend met my mom for the first time today. My mom cooked dinner and he came over.
My family is a traditional, church going family and he wasn't raised that way and had a somewhat troublesome childhood after his parents divorced.

My mom had sat the table and the food and by the time we sat down he was already eating (he didn't wait for us to sit, nor did he say his grace), then the whole time, he was slurping his spaghetti, burping aloud, boy was I embarassed, especially after my mom gave me a dissapproving look.

Did I forget to mention that he was using the bathroom with the door wide open?

Unfortunately, he doesn't see anything wrong with his behavior, partly (i think) because he is not used to having family dinner and doesnt have any etiquitte.

I'm meeting his family next week and quite nervous

Advice?

I did try to brief him, but he told me not to "tell him how to act". As far as how he acts around me, I did not expect him to behave in the same manner around my mother.

I act a differently each around my friends, work, professors, family, church, depending on the situation.
Yes, if I am around my friends and family, sure I can burp aloud, but when meeting someone's family that calls for a different behavior, I just assumed that it was an unspoken rule.

Ok, the real answer? Drop him, he's a loser. He's ill-mannered and too proud to change. I'd bet you can do better.

I would start seriously putting him through a school on manners if you believe in him that much.

We don't get to choose our upbringings, but we can choose to stick by bad upbringings or we could choose to improve ourselves. He needs to improve himself no matter if he is with you or not.

However if he is unwilling to learn manners you may want to look elsewhere.
