  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and Tombstone are about ties for me. Open Range isn't far behind

Why?
Not exactly sure for the order. If you don't mind me being that honest

The Good - isn't so good
The Bad - is bad
and The Ugly - is a worm
It's an interesting movie, full of cheats. It's complex and simple at the same time. I might have to watch it again

Tombstone - The characters are aware of their nature and nature of their business and it haunts them throughout. One of the best ever made.

Open Range - It could be looked at as a movie about repentences. They still didn't have to call God a
SOB
to get to that end. It would probably be on top, if it wasn't for that.

Shanghai Noon. Although this film is not strictly western, I think it's the best movie ever made in the Wild West.
One way ticket to Carson city, sir?

I second this opinion - the reluctant heros. I think in a way Open Range has tried to duplicate this plot without Tombstone's excellent character development. Open Range develops Boss and Charlie way too much IMO- my sister quit watching mid way and said "these are the 'talkingest' cowboys I've ever seen- like cowboys in therapy". My brother-in-law and I continued watching but giggled much of the way through. Especially when Sue slaps the marshall and calls him sorry or low-down or whatever and he replys "I know- that's just the way it is"- huh?

I rented it last night to see if I could figure out why I disagree with so many critics and fans, and did find it to be better on second viewing because my expectations were so low the second time around. The major flaw to me is the writing- dialogue in particular. Also what's up with the sentimentality with men of that era for dogs? Kostner's, Robert Duvall's, and Annette Benning's great skill as actors, great cinematography, keep the movie from being a flop.

Also, Tombstone has the stellar portrayal by Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday- a western character that I don't think will ever be topped.
