I upgraded from an i5-6200U laptop with a SSD that read and wrote 400MB/second, 8GB dual-channel 2133MHz RAM, and HD 620 integrated graphics, to a desktop with an i5-7600K, 8GB dual-channel 2400MHz RAM, a 7200RPM hard drive, and a 2GB GT 730 Fermi.

Here are the improvements I am seeing from my new desktop over the laptop:

The video game Axis Football, an indie football PC game: A massive 2x improvement in performance over the laptop.

The video game Sonic Generations: A +30% improvement in performance over the laptop.

General usage - navigating Windows, startup, etc: Although there is a slight margin of error, I'm confident when I say I'm seeing a +60-80% improvement from the desktop with the powerful processor and the 7200RPM hard drive.

Also, for what it's worth, I noticed my computer is performing in games like a computer with a processor that is a Tier or two down, but with a graphics card that is one or two Tiers up, like a Radeon 250 GDDR5 2GB. Because I have such a fast processor.

I'm not ready to write it in stone, but it seems like getting a fast Kaby Lake causes the computer to chew through real-time a little bit faster, even with a not-so-great video card.

Yeah those are good specs. i5-7600k should suite you well. you got the overclock version. Are you going to try to take it up a notch? Do you have stock cooling?

Also, did you stay in budget? hehe...

I bought the computer from Gamestop.com for $710.

It actually, for some reason, uses a Cooler Master CPU cooler which may be a slight Tier above stock.

I don't plan on overclocking. I need a good, stable PC to get work done on. HOWEVER, the K version isn't a total waste as Intel clocks them up a little more by default. They also have a higher TDP, which I think is somehow a good thing for the processor, not to be limited so much by TDP and a more limited voltage? I wouldn't know though. Talking about such deep matters is a bit out of my pay scale.

Furthermore, tomorrow I am receiving a Sound Blaster Omni external sound card and 10watt Sony speaker, to improve sound.

I'm actually pretty happy with my PC. I resolved to upgrade the video card in January, unless I absolutely need more performance before then.
