  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

They're just one of those bands that I really should love but I don't. The first song of theirs I heard was "If You're Feeling Sinister," which amazed me (and still does). So I went out and bought the album of same name, and was really pretty disappointed. IYFS is truly brilliant, one of my favorite songs of all time, but the rest of their songs are either boring or just OK, IMO.

anyone else a fan? ;)

love 'em, love 'em, love 'em!! Isobel Campbell has some solo stuff out... have just bought Amorino, she has such a great voice!! First time I heard them was because Boy with the Arab Strap (the single) was used as the theme tune for a great TV comedy called Teachers. I have all their music now!

Just got "Dear Catastrophe Waitress". Some pretty great songs. "Asleep on a Sunbeam" is one of my all-time favorite songs. Very creative band. I can feel my brain being stimulated as I hear songs that include more than the typical rock instruments. Very talented band.

No. All 4/4, bass/ bass/ snare, 3 chord indie bands astound me with their prominence in spite of their medioctrity.

You may be thinking of a different band. Belle and Sebastian are very big on woodwind instruments. "Asleep on a Sunbeam" sounds like a ukelele. I don't recall hearing any electric guitar. If I knew more about music, I could possibly identify more of their instruments, but they sound far from the typical guitar rock band. Even their most guitar-oriented sounds are "guitar" in the sense of the Beatles, if anything.

Interesting that I should see this thread...

..I'm a HUGE fan of the Decemberists, and I adore Bright Eyes...and have been told by many people that if I like those two so much I should check out Belle and Sebastian. Any truth to that correlation?

And if a Decemberists fan were to go scrounging on Amazon for a used B&S CD, which one would you recommend? ;)

(Oh, and is anyone a fan of Neutral Milk Hotel? Another supposed indie band that I've been told I would like...what is their sound like?)

I have several songs off of Aeroplane, and they are pretty good. "Two Headed Boy" is one of my all time favorite songs. You should PM nadroj1985 about NMH. :)
