• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

i just started reading a book that one of my drum teachers put out called the cycle of self empowerment. in the book he talks about being positive no matter what disabilities that we may have. this got me thinking that i would really like to start being more positive in my life despite having ocd.
my ocd can get so bad that it can be crippling and it attacks me in all kinds of ways. but i really want to start having a more positive attitude all the time, and that includes when my ocd is beating me up. what are some good ways that any of you can think of that will help me to be positive when my ocd is causing me a lot of struggle and pain?
i also tend to do things to get away from my ocd, like sleeping a lot, so that i dont have to deal with it because of the pain that the ocd causes me. what are some better ways of dealing with the ocd that is better for me then sleeping a lot to get away from the ocd?
these things are very important to me because i think that being more positive and doing things that deal with the ocd in a better way will really improve the quality of my life. so any help that you all can give me will be very appreciated.
thanks so much and God belss all of you.

That sounds like a good book you're reading. Try finding other books like that to read. Get involved in Church. Spend more time praying. And ask God to fill all of the time that you idle or try to escape from OCD, with something pleasing in His eyes. Something that can help you to continue in the right direction and maintain a positive attitude. And help strengthen your relationship with Christ.

Hi drummingman,
What helps me to be more positive is to act as if I'm feeling happy, optimistic and positive. I stand up to my OCD as if it were a threatening dog. I act as if I'm not afraid of it even though I feel the fear inside. Doing this means not letting my OCD cause me to cower or retreat from the normal activities of life. This means accepting that I'm going to have the feeling of anxiety but that I can still choose to live each day in a productive manner. So many times in life we let our feelings dictate our actions instead of letting our actions lead our feelings to where they need to be. This is why I love this quote from CS Lewis so much:
"The emotion of fear is in itself no sin, the act of cowardice is all that matters."
He is saying that our emotions will try and get us to do their bidding but the courage to do the right things is what really matters. "Obedience is the key to all doors."
There are times when the feelings of love can seem to be absent from a close relationship but real love isn't all about feelings it's about acting in loving ways toward the person we are supposed to be loving, and in doing so we find that our feelings will eventually follow our actions.
So instead of saying, "Don't worry be happy", we need to really say "I'm worried - so what - I'm going to act as if I'm calm and happy any way."
Just my 2 cents. :)
Sounds like your on the right track.
