  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What exactly is this all about? I have no idea where to begin looking for this or how to decide! anyone willing to give me a hand in this!? I would really appreciate it! thanks in advance!
This is a tradition in the Church. I'm not sure what the reason is (someone else can help out here, I'm sure). The best way to come up with a saint is to do some research on the lives of the saints. This can be interesting in itself. Now, I'll tell you how I went about it. I was at that stupid teenage stage and was a big fan of Elizabeth Taylor, so I chose Elizabeth. (I'm nowhere near her age, I just "idolized her) But I don't regret it. After learning about St. Elizabeth (Mary's cousin), I'm glad I made that choice. My middle name is Ann, so I have Mary's mother's name, too!
After you're confirmed, You can think of your name as first, middle, confirm name, Last. It becomes a part of your identity. You can establish a personal relationship with this saint. So make your choice wisely and meaningful.:holy:

God Bless!

I have been told that this practice isn't really practiced anymore.

I know my parish doesn't do confirmation names.
Unfortunately, mine didn't either when I converted. I felt cheated then and still do to some extent. They have since then gone back to making a confirmation name selection part of the confirmation process. *sigh* In my own mind, I chose a confirmation name - it's Monica. Talk about steadfast perseverence. Just the example I need frequently. :)

(I was confirmed in 1978, so keep this in mind.)

I don't know of any person choosing a confirmation name of a Saint of the other gender.

I remember a girl in 1980 that tried to use the name Paul. The nuns would not let her as they said it was inappropriate.

I know a woman who chose "Patrick" because it was because of St. Patrick that she ended up Catholic!

There are nuns with masculine names (in Tours, France, I met a a Sister Marie-Christophe, and in New York I met just yesterday a Sister Jerome) and many male religious take "Mary" as a second name.

Which is ironic because I have known of multiple nuns with Paul in their name.

i was wondering about that too, but i was told that you are able to choose a name of a saint who is the opposite gender, but you have to change it to fit your own. like Andrew would be Annie.

I don't think St. Andrew liked to be called "Annie".

I say, and I have ZERO authroity, if a woman wants to take a male Saint's name for her confirmation name, and if it it allowed, then take it on AS IS.

Or.. can I switch to "St. JOHN of Arc"?

Not that it's a big help, but in Orthodoxy many people have patrons of the opposite sex. Usually the name is masculinized or feminized where appropriate. Boys named after the Mother of God in Greece will be called "Panagiotis" (from Mary's title Panagia meaning all-holy). Girls named for St. Seraphim of Sarov are called "Seraphima". I have met a nun called Mother Seraphima.

Just look for a saint whose life or works touch you in some special way. If you already happen to have the name of a saint as your legal name, you can use that, but it's not necessary if you "click" better with a different saint.

Incidentally, I am glad for my patron saint--although she herself is a post-schism Greek saint, there are many holy ones of God called Matrona in both the East and the West. I've also read that the name itself is the Latin word for "mother" or "lady", though I haven't been able to check up on that.
