  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I finally found the old list of my favorite Lutheran sanctuaries. Here they are in all of their beauty.

Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim, Norway

Vår Frue Church, Trondheim, Norway

St. Mary's Church, Bergen, Norway

Closeup on Pulpit, St. Mary's Church, Bergen, Norway

Heddal Stave Church, Heddal, Norway

Hadsel Church, Hadsel, Norway

St. Michael's Church, Hamburg, Germany

Closeup on Altar, Cathedral of St. Peter at Schleswig, Schleswig, Germany

Helsinki Cathedral, Helsinki, Finland

Church of Our Savior, Copenhagen, Denmark

Church of Our Lady, Copenhagen, Denmark
Thorvaldsen's Christus has long been considered the "most perfect" statue of Christ.
Regrettably, it has come into heavy use by the LDS and as a result is frequently associated with Mormonism.

St. Gertrude's (The German Church), Stockholm, Sweden

Chapel of the Royal Palace, Stockholm, Sweden

Memorial Church, Speyer

Closeup on Altar, Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Weimar, Germany

St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (WELS), Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Historic Trinity Lutheran (LCMS), Detroit, Michigan

Zion Lutheran Church (LCMS), Fort Wayne, Indiana

And finally, for those of you with modern tastes: Kramer Chapel, Concordia Theological Seminary (LCMS), Fort Wayne, Indiana

This is most likely going to be an extremely long post, as I've been holding out on English Gothic Architecture. I absolutely love English Gothic, and view it as the greatest form of architecture ever.
Here goes.

Lady Chapel, Bristol Cathedral

Tower, Canterbury Cathedral

Corona, Canterbury Cathedral

Trinity Chapel, Canterbury Cathedral

East Window, Carlisle Cathedral

Rood Screen, Chester Cathedral

Nave and Lantern Ceiling, Ely Cathedral

High Altar, Ely Cathedral

Lady Chapel, Exeter Cathedral

High Altar, Gloucester Cathedral

Cloisters, Gloucester Cathedral

Presbytery, Norwich Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford
I'll be there this summer.

Choir, Ripon Cathedral

Rood Screen, Ripon Cathedral

Reredos, Southwark Cathedral

Wells Cathedral

Lady Chapel, Wells Cathedral

Stairs to Chapter House, Wells Cathedral

Chapter House, Wells Cathedral

High Altar, Winchester Cathedral

Lady Chapel, Worcester Cathedral

King's Screen, York Minster

West Window, York Minster
(different from the East Window shown at the beginning of the thread)

Chapter House, York Minster

Reredos, Truro Cathedral

High Altar, Liverpool Cathedral

Liverpool Cathedral

And though not a cathedral . . .

Bath Abbey

I'll do another post showing the heavenly imposition these churches have on the areas around them, which I think make them all the more impressive and beautiful.

What I can't really begin to explain is how prominent the churches in my last post really within their cities. These buildings are literally the center of town, towering over every other building and ensuring that wherever you may be you most likely are able to see the cathedral, and thus, ever remember the presence of God. Here are some of the best photographs of this trend:

York Minster

Lincoln Cathedral

Worcester Cathedral

Here's just another beautiful shot that's very "Merry England":

Well here is mine. We'e just a simple baptist church. believe it or not. It isn't as grand as some of these older churches, but the building has been around for like probably 60 years now. The church itself has been around 75+.
