  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Any thoughts on beards? I've been shaving my off during the warmer months and about to grow it back out...I just like having a beard.

A lot of Gospel men have worn and do wear beards. I found two sermons on Sermon Audio about beards and biblical reasons for them. I'll listen latter.

Personally, I find a beard uncomfortable once it grows to a certain length. One good reason for them, might be to add warmth in colder weather. But biblical reasons? Would be news to me...reminds me of Amish men. :D

I don't get the Messianic thing but didn't the OT teach that you were not to cut your beard, at all? It was a mark that made Israel different from the Pagan nations who were clean shaven, cut their beards for the dead, etc.

The pagan nations did two things that God didn't want Israel involved in.

1) They brought their beards to a point, much like Calvin's beard in the image I posted not long ago. It was probably part of some pagan religious ceremony.

2) They marred the edges of their beard. During times of mourning the pagans wold hack at the sides of their face. They weren't clean shaved, but they were hacked up and patchy. There was probably a lot of bleeding too. This is why the Scriptures command you not to shave during times of mourning or repentance.

I don't see these things as moral, with the exception of hacking at yourself, but I recognize that God knows best.

The first point is too general. Some nations grew their beards but others would attach a fake pointed beard.

I already coverd your second point in my post, yeah, that's why Israel was commanded to not cut their beards like I already posted.

How does the Messianic thing work?

You just pick what you think you should follow and that's it?

Are you a member of a Messianic assembly, if not, how does your church handle your practices?

I usually don't call myself a Messianic. And no, I don't just pick what to follow. I follow what is morally acceptable and pleasing to Christ. Obviously going in my back yard and sacrificing a bull for my sins isn't pleasing to Christ.

I do wear the tassels whenever I wear a shirt with four corners (Numbers 11:37-41). These remind me of Christ's Law. I keep the Spiritual application (accidentally) of this law as well as the physical.

I eat Kosher. I believe that while it may be okay morally to eat swine's flesh, it isn't good for you to. God didn't design a pig to be eaten. Not only this, but during the millennial reign of Christ, Christians will revert back to kosher eating (Isaiah 66).

I keep other ceremonial (what you would probably call ceremonial anyway) laws, but not those having to do with sacrifices and offerings.

As for the civil law, I do not believe that God's standard has changed. I would concur with Greg Bahnsen on theonomy/reconstructionism.
