I had one of nephews go back to school and he came home feeling as if a cold on the first day and he had a test at school next day so he insisted on going, but by the time he got to school he called and said he was very ill and he was taken to the doctor immeadiately by his mother. They tested and he had the swine flu and they were able to give him medicines to combat it, but it could have been worse as several children have died after getting it. Here is some information from WebMD:

"1 in 3 Children Who Died of Swine Flu Had Been Healthy...A third of the 36 kids who died of H1N1 swine flu by last August had no underlying medical condition, the CDC reports.Four of the otherwise healthy kids who died of swine flu were aged 2 years or younger. Kids under 5, and especially those under age 2, are at particularly high risk of serious disease when they get H1N1 swine flu."

Oh the irony!

As a third semester Nursing student, I've been told I have to get the H1N1 shot.

Well, let me rephrase that. My class was told that we don't HAVE to get the shot, but if we don't, we will not be allowed to do patient care in our clinical setting (even though we're not allowed to be around patients with the flu). If we can't do our clinicals, we will not pass.

So....in essence, same thing.

Interestingly enough, I joined a one-hour class this semester where we are encouraged to discuss current trends and issues concerning nurses and nursing students. Guess what topic I decided to discuss? :)

So far the support from my fellow classmates has been wonderful and they're all expressing concerns about being guinea pigs for this vaccine too.

However, don't be suprised if I get on here in the near future and announce I was kicked out of school.

I won't take this shot.

I don't think they can enforce a rule that you never agreed to uphold. Getting the swine flu shot is not a part of the curriculum, even though you are required to care for patients. You could always wear a mask when taking care of patients.

I suggest you consult with an attorney on this matter. If they refuse to let you pass because of this then it would seem to me that you should be able to file a suit against the school.

The weird part is, they haven't offered to let us wear masks when caring for patients. Obviously this is an alternative, but they sure aren't offering it up.

You are absolutely right that I didn't sign up for this when I joined Nursing school, unlike if I had joined the military.

The oddest part of this is that the college itself cannot force people to get vaccines. I guess (I have to guess since they aren't free with information) they're saying the hospitals we visit are making us do it. Oddly enough, I talked to several healthcare providers in my church today, most of which are employed at said hospitals, and not one of them has gotten or will get the vaccine...and they're still employed.

There's a pregnant woman in my class right now, and I can guarantee you that they won't force her to get the shot. Nor will they penalize her for not doing it.

That situation may be my ace in the hole. If she can give healthcare, then so can I. If they kick her out of school for being pregnant and not getting the shot, they're in for a huge lawsuit, and I'm sure they know it.

Actually, it would seem that even if it is a policy of the hospital they still don't have the right to fail you on these grounds. At the very least they should allow you to sign a waver and let you wear a mask. There are hospitals that are making this an option for their nurses. I would certainly ask if this could be made an option if I were you.

I asked several people I know in the healthcare field if they thought the vaccine was a good idea. All of them told me no.

In fact, they all work at various hospitals where I'll be doing clinicals and they all said the same thing--their hospitals are NOT requiring the shot be mandatory. At least not yet.

The pregnant woman in my class has already told staff she will not be getting the vaccine. I'm so proud of her and I'm behind her 100%.

Here's the short and skinny on this subject...SEASONED nurses and doctors are saying no to this vaccine. That needs to make us stop and think about why. Most people in this world (unlike here on CF...ha) don't just want to argue for argument's sake. There's a REASON they're saying no.

I realize being mandated gets under a lot of people's skin and it could just be that fact alone that's making them protest, but I don't think so. The ones I've talked to are more worried about the way this vaccine was rushed through trials.

The handout they're giving us to "convince" us to take the shot has me more skeptical than I was before. The manufacturers do not KNOW what effects the vaccine will have on a fetus, nor do they know what effect it will have on fertility.

One bottle I saw said, "May cause sterility."

They're sending in the troops to talk to our class this week about the safety of this vaccine. Instead of arguing with the powers-that-be, I'm simply going to say, "that's great. Now can you tell us what alternative there is for those of us that refuse to take the shot?"

This is still America.

This lawsuit is going to help so many people and I'm so glad they filed it!

One of my instructors, the one that's been trying to shut me down in my discussion class, said that the only reason the healthcare providers in NY are protesting is because they are "uninformed". Keep in mind that most of the nurses and doctors I've seen interviewed over this have been in the field for decades longer than she has!

We're supposed to stick up for each other and that has been hammered into my head since I started school, but see how well that works when someone is opposed to you? It's just like any other profession. We turn against those that don't go with the majority.

She also tried to instill fear about pregnant women (3) that have died from the swine flu. The vaccine isn't available yet, so those women would've died regardless (although it is very, very sad). Pregnant women die from the regular flu EVERY year, vaccine or not. Swine flu or not.

I have already planned on refusing the vaccine, whatever that may mean for me, but I'm still fighting against it for others.

Here's a funny story....

Yesterday we had a meeting for the Student Nurses Association, and they brought in a Natural doctor to speak to the class. When they were introducing him they went on and on about how many people he has helped, how educated he is, etc etc.

During the Q&A I asked him what he thought about the vaccine. It's no surprise what he said right? After he left they were sure to announce that he's not a "real" doctor and that wasn't a medical opinion.

They turned on him because of what he said. He was wonderful before that!

It's sickening. I'm thoroughly disgusted with the whole thing.

I do want to make a difference though, so I'm also trying to stay under the radar as much as I can until I get THROUGH Nursing school.

Lord, please be with me!

(It's great to see you too DL!)

"H1N1: Doctors say parents should heed warnings about swine flu and kids
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_med_swine_flu_childrenGov't: Swine flu linked to 11 more child deaths"

"The swine flu is causing an unprecedented amount of illness for this early in the fall, with the deaths of 11 more children reported in the past week. And less vaccine than expected will be ready by month's end, federal health officials said Friday.

Of the 86 children who have died since the new swine flu arose last spring, 43 deaths have been reported in September and early October alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. That's a startling number because in some past winters, the CDC has counted 40 or 50 child deaths for the entire flu season — and no one knows how long this swine flu outbreak will last."

Pigs may have tested positive for H1N1 - Yahoo! News

"Pigs may have tested positive for H1N1"

"Pigs in Minnesota may have tested positive for the H1N1 virus in a preliminary test, the first potential U.S. cases in swine, Agriculture Department officials said Friday."

"Vilsack's caution aside, the news is clearly unwelcome for the pork industry. Producers had been struggling before the H1N1 virus gained public attention. Advocates have worked assiduously to distance the pork industry from the H1N1 virus, but Friday's news once again ties the two.

Agriculture officials have said they expected H1N1 to reach domestic pigs this year. It has led pork producers to push for a hog vaccine for the virus. H1N1 infections of swine herds have previously been reported in Canada, Australia and Argentina but not previously the United States."

Sometimes my initial reaction to this kinda news is, "that goes to show yet another reason not to eat pork"...

But in reality vegetables can be susceptible to various types of diseases as well. We have to be careful about whatever we eat, regardless of the type of food. But meat products are definitely more likely to be a source of illness.
