Country music used to be good. The subject of the songs were/are suspect (my wife left me in my pick-up truck and ran over the dog type thing), but there were some real songs, about real things that folks experienced, and the emphasis back then was NOT on the newest, hottest, most-promotable person that coud be found.

BTW -- a friend of mine does a lot of recording work in Nashville, and knows a lot of these "stars", and he tells me -- they have to use a pitch bender on their voice, cause they all sing flat. :D

If you like modern *country*, God bless ya, keep working so you can buy those cd's, and enjoy.

Oh -- and a friend of mine from the midwest here, in a serious discussion about pizza with an east coast person said,

"You can put pineapple on something, but you CANNOT call it pizza".

Somehow-- I think this is comparable to the *country* question -- but what do I know?? I'm just a Fiddlepicker!

I agree that some of CMT lately has made me grab the remote and change channels until a particular song is over. I get sick of modern country only because of one thing...the hits are overplayed. There are soooo many good songs out there, even from the artists the country stations tend to focus on. Instead they'll play a hit over and over to the point where at work I'm hearing it once ever 1/2 to 1 hour. Come on!

Even though I cant stand most country, I have to give the musicians props, especially people like Brad Paisley and Keith Urban who are freakin good guitar players. Also I really
really enjoy Nickel Creek and they are all amazing musicians as well. I will have to say though that most country artists can ACTUALLY SING which I cant say about pop or rock musicians today for the most part.

I agree. I am not even a big fan of country music, And I haven't been listening to the genre for a long time. But I can not stand some of these new artists (and some that already exist). If it sounds to much like pop then it isn't country!

How do "redneck" and "hippy" go together? Anyway...

Big & Rich is pop, not country.
HA! Good question. :D

I grew up redneck, turned to hippie, then became a Christian. :preach:

In other words -- I used to be both, just not at the same time. :)

(and I agree -- *big and rich* is pop.)

who is "big and rich"

redneck and hippy, reminds me of a good old "worlds most tattooed man" aka david allan coe song

"the bikers stared at the cowboys, who were laughing at the hippies, who were praying they'd get out of there alive."

I agree, new country (at least nashville) is horrid, there's a ton of good music pouring out of austin, just remember

"I don't matter who's in trashville, BOB WILLS IS STILL THE KING!"

There still is true country around but those phony country stations wont play it. Loretta Lynn made an album last year that was ignored by Country radio. In years past Merle Haggard and the late Johnny Cash have made albums ignored by Country radio. There is Lucinda Williams, Tift Merritt, Thad Cockrell and others to name just a few. This real stuff is ignored in favor of processed commercialized, formulatic, junk.
