Bare Breastfeeding in Public: Appropriate or not?

I say not appropriate as well. There are ways to be discreet about it. I know that many argue that women in other countries do this completely out in the open, but this is a different society.

I don't mind it one bit. Use them for what they're made for! I do prefer using a simple covering like a blanket or a sling to make it private... but honestly, if someone's offended by the natural way of things, they need to get out of their bubbles some more

I just can't believe that people think this is inapropriate. I had two children and I breast fed them in public. Babies, especially newborns need to eat every 2 to 4 hours. Would you rather they just starve? I would refuse to feed my baby in a public restroom either. They are the nastiest places on earth.

That being said, I was very discreet. I always had a blanket covering my breast and a maternity bra (one that has a flap over the actual breast so you don't have to take the whole bra off). I never just flopped my breast out and let the babe start sucking. I never wanted to embarass anyone.

Breastfeeding is so natural. Please don't be grossed out or offended by it. It is actually a loving, bonding gesture.

Bare? I think it's entirely appropriate, but there is no reason to have a lack of modesty and discretion.

Funny story: We were about to watch a movie. My step sister and her husband were visiting us for the weekend. She comes and sits down on the couch across from me and asks if I mind if she feeds her son. I’m thinking in my mind, “Uh… why wouldn’t I, I wonder what she means by that?” I said, “No, of course not.” And she replies, “Well, some people feel uncomfortable about it,” as she subtly begins to breast feed her son. “Oooooh! That kind of ‘feed!’” I think as I kind of turn to my side.

It doesn’t bother me. I was breast fed. That’s why I’m so smart and strong and kind and caring and good looking and… what, no takers?

Well I don't care if its covered up. When I said bare-breastfeeding, I meant uncovered where the breast is out there for the world to see.

This thread got started when I saw someone's avatar of a woman breastfeeding with the boob just hanging out there.

Well how can one be breastfeeding if the breast is uncovered? If the child is eating the entire nipple is covered as well as more of the boob with the baby's head and hands in the way.

Breastfeeding is perfectly acceptable in public. Covered or not. Why? Because as humans, babies have the right to eat anywhere they have a right to be. Period.

It's fine. I certainly don't want to eat in 90 degree weather with a blanket over my head. For that fact I don't want to eat in 65 degree conditions with a blanket over my head. Ugh, hot and claustrophobic.

(65 degree is the average maintained indoor temperature in the US.)

OK just for arguments sake, lets turn the tables. For those of you who think its OK for someone to breastfeed completely uncovered: Is it inappropriate for someone to relieve themselves in public, with everything showing? There's a point to this I promise.

Well the point is, usually a person would say, "no thats gross", or "no that should be done away from public." But I could make the same argument about a woman flopping her boob out to feed her kid in public because I would say there are some things that should be done covered up in privacy.

A child eating and someone urinating or otherwise are 2 entire different things. Now if you want to compare a child's diaper being changed on a table in a restaurant and someone publicly urinating go right ahead. Apple to apples and all that.

And FWIW - a woman's breast doesn't flop when it is full of milk.

Surprised that because we are on these forums someone hasn't already made an off-handed sexist remark against women and tried to back it up with some scripture.

I think it's completely appropriate. It doesn't have anything to do with you if you're offended by it. If you are, it just means your immature or ultra conservative. The woman isn't out there to embarrass anyone - she's feeding her child.

That said, there are a number of seedy men that take advantage of this, and the number of times I've heard on the news how so and so was breastfeeding and her breasts grabbed is appalling. So I guess I wouldn't encourage it for this reason. That's right - seedy men.
