I really hoped this was a hoax. But it isn’t.

A man walks into a bar with a gun. "This is a robbery," he tells the handful of people inside.

Most of the bar patrons don't want any trouble. They duck under the tables and hand over their wallets when asked.

But one man is different. One man has absolute nerves of steel, and not only does he refuse to hand over his smartphone at gunpoint — he actually lights up a cigarette and watches from the bar while the robbery takes place.

Might be like the scene from Dances With Wolves where the guy charges into gun fire because he doesn't care if he dies. Maybe this guy is about to be on a life changing adventure.

I saw it Friday and was really shocked. But its mentioned on other sites. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I was always told it's best to hand over what's requested. Not every robber would necessarily spare you like this guy did... I'm sure most don't want a murder charge on top of robbery, but some have such a long list of convictions, they don't really care any longer.

True. There was an incident here where someone was murdered over an iPhone. She refused to hand it over and he shot her in front of her daughter and friend.

Terrible! What a pointless way to die...:(

At my college, in a major city, students were frequently held at gunpoint. One time right on campus. Most of the students handed over everything as they were instructed, but a guy and girl did get attacked when they refused.

I think some people believe the robber isn’t willing to harm them. That’s why this video is disturbing. His behavior could have incited a different ending and placed others in harms way.

Yeah.. honestly it wouldn't surprise me if this guy is really depressed.

I had nothing like this happen to me.. but I've faced some dangerous moments and my depressed mind didn't get freaked out about it. During some of my darker moments I'd probably act just like this guy.

I honestly felt something was off with him or they were working together. Many people are celebrating his behavior. But you raised a point worth considering.

I had a similar thought that he was drinking alone to drown his pain and likely didn’t give a rip what happened to him. In a past period of my life I lived with a deep depression that left me feeling that way.

Instead of playing the tough guy as some have suggested, he was probably just emotionally numb.

I looked at a video of this, I think.

The guy with the gun tries to take the cell phone out of the patron's hand. The patron pulls it away and puts it on the counter and the robber moves on. Another phone is nearby, but the robber does not take it, but he does take money from the other person's wallet, leaving the ID and cards, it seems. And he goes to the register and gets money.

So . . . possibly, he did not want any cell phones or cards, just that nobody uses a phone to call 911. And the body language of the guy keeping his phone matches this, how he pulls his phone back and places it where the robber can see he is not calling the police. And he at times seems to be actively communicating with the robber, could be saying don't worry about it, do you think I'm stupid or something?

His response is so unexpected it probably threw the robber off. It does appear he’s communicating with him. But he’s generally unfazed and laissez-faire. He isn’t playing the hero. He’s lighting up and having a drink while this is happening.

probably drunk.
Exactly what I thought. He very well have had one too many. If he was so brave, wouldn't he have at least made a small attempt to help the guy next to him who was hiding under the stool? But he only protected his own belongings.

Very good observations! That may be exactly what dialogue was going on. I was curious what he would be saying to the robber.
