Even though I am a United Methodist, I decided to post this thread under the Baptist umbrella to get their input, get it from the horses mouth instead of assuming.

In the Methodist church, we do preach on the gifts of the spirit. However,
  1. Speaking in tongues is a gift that you can get.
  2. Speaking in tongues is not "the only" evidence of the new birth, salvation.
  3. Not all Christians speak in tongues
  4. We neither forbid it, nor do stess only speaking in tongues.
In the United Methodist church, we had a charismatic movement per se back in the 1970's. The United Methodist Renewal Services Fellowship (UMRSF) was started, and now, the name (UMRSF) was changed to Aldersgate Renewal Ministries. Since some pastors in the United Methodist Church, including myself speak in tongues. Earlier, I've heard some criticism from Baptist saying that Methodists are [liberal] just because they speak in tongues, if they speak in tongues, or allow speaking in tongues?

Does your denomination [Baptist] believe that Methodists are liberal because some speak in tongues or have a charismatic renewal within the denomination?

Just want to get your take on it, without assumption, directly from you. Just answer the above question. This is not a tongues and interpretation question, corporate worship question, when/how one can speak in tongues question? This is just a question asking for your [Baptist] perception of some Methodist that speak in tongues.

Thank You Much,

I'm not your typical SBC'er, but I think I can answer this question for you pretty safely.

No.

Liberalism is associated with mainline interpretations from the historical-critical method perspective and certain stances on hot-button issues.

I would say, very generally speaking, tongues tend to be associated with more conservative elements of a denomination. Blanket statements can get you in trouble, of course. ;)

I guess that, if you are saved, then you are a brother or sister in Christ, I would say. But to be perfectly honest, I have never heard of Methodists that speak in tongues..

This has been my experience as well. I did once I believe, but that's a long story. Its never been brought up in my methodist church as a topic, and I haven't seen it my church or the others I've tried in the area (six). Could just be my area though.
