I have a question that arises from my own experience and limited understanding of the common basis of the different denominations in this forum. I was baptised in a Southern Baptist church, was in a Grace Brethern church for most of my young life and became Episcopal in college. My husband worked with the Mennonnite Economic Development Associates for a number of years and I have a relative and good friend who are Quakers. My church history is weak in this area. I have experienced, myself and through others a great difference in the belief systems of these groups. What are the common characteristics/ beliefs that join these groups?

The two belief systems are indeed very different. I believe that quakers were put here because of the peace witness, and not because of similarities in theology.
The peace witness of the Friends and of the Mennonites have the same biblical basis, but are not historically connected. Both have a tendency to see the gospels, and especially the Sermon on the Mount as the key to all of scripture, whereas most other protestants tend to use the letter to the Romans this way.

Neither group puts a whole lot of emphasis on systematic theology, and most reject the Scholastic approach of Catholics such as Aquinas and protestants such as Calvin. Rather, both emphasize living out our faith, day-to-day, in community, taking the teachings of Jesus very seriously.

While not historically related, Anabaptists and Friends have much in common. I have fellowshipped with both, and am also aware of the differences, but there is a lot in common, as well.

Very interesting info and a great analysis!

Thank you to everyone who has replied! I have looked at some website recommendations as well. I agree that in my experience my Quaker friends have alot in common with my Mennonite friends. It may be noteworthy to add that my Mennonite friends are more at the liberal end of that spectrum as well.:)

Well if you beat the bushes a bit you can find the other end of the spectrum-conservative mennonites can be a real treasure if you can find them.

I am Baptist as is my whole family. However, it was a minister from a Friends church that led my father-in-law to Christ on his deathbed. I have heard that there is very little difference between Baptist and Friends. Baptists dunk. Quakers don't baptise at all. Other than that, very similar doctrines.
