From Reuters: Rock act Mute Math is so frustrated at being branded a Christian band by Warner Music Group's Christian outlet Word Records, it has taken matters into its own hands, self-releasing its debut album Feb. 1.

And last September, Billboard has learned, Teleprompt Records -- a label co-founded by Mute Math keyboardist Paul Meany -- filed suit against Warner Bros. Records and Word.

The suit is for breach of contract and negligent misrepresentation, and seeks punitive damages. Warner, however, might be somewhat pardoned for the marketing approach.

I wish they didn't do this. I love Mutmath and I don't really see the whole point for their lawsuit, especially since they were playing at Soulfest this year, a "christian" festival. Still love the music though. Maybe some one could explain to me better why they would do this?

i bought an album by Mutemath, and one song specifically, i saw a reason to think they were Christian.

and with them playing at Soulfest, i kind of can't see anything that they would complain about.

it seems to me, that the artist is just frustrated with his former glory and now wants to expand outside of the Christian market, so he is sueing over it...which seems a bit childish/selfish/self-destructive as a musician. he's sueing the people who brought them their fanbase/sells, to which, well it wasn't mentioned about their success outside of the Christian fanbase, and if it isn't even comparable to their success on the Christian fanbase, he's committing suicide in their career.

but if the rest of the band members aren't Christian, then the band should have taken more responsibility over themselves to be sure they aren't lumped into somethign that the BAND isn't.

but i guess if he doesn't have control over this, it isn't his fault, and maybe with the lack of control that was given to him, maybe it's good that the band is doing what they are doing.

they are trying to escape being set into one category, which they feel will 'typecast' them, so to speak, making them less accessible to the mainstream. can't blame them for not wanting the label, mainly because it's SOMEWHAT out of their control.

That being said, this is a BAD move on their part. They are bound to lose fans over it, and that's a shame.
