My dad planted bamboo along a stone wall on a rock ledge that had less than a foot of soil on it in the 1960s. People thought he was crazy. No one grew bamboo in Connecticut that anyone knew about. Now the stuff is 60 feet tall and runs 150 feet. I use it for tomato cages. Great stuff and its free (ever price an eight foot tall tomato cage?). This year for the first time we're tossing some fertilzer on it.

Oh and you can eat it too. Heard some botanical gardens on the west coast have a problem with that. People sneak in to harvest the shoots.

The on-going joke in the family is I think from an old SNL skit: "Honey, the pandas are in the bamboo again!". Husband says "Don't worry, I have "Panda Strips!" (cut to panda stuck on sticky tape) and "Panda Fogger" (panda being gassed by a fire extinguisher sized fogger).

We installed bamboo floors in our great room 2 years ago. We chose the vertical cut (doesn't show the elbows--less busy) in the carbonized finish. We love it. A very understated grain pattern with a beautiful honey color. A great background for area rugs and it goes really well with the contemporary architecture of our house.

Sliding a large floor plant in a heavy ceramic pot did scratch the finish. So I would strongly recommend felt or teflon protector pads under furniture. I was also told that some rug pads (with latex, I think) can discolor the finish over time. There is also a choice between solid and engineered (laminated) bamboo planks. The engineered was recommended for basement or below grade installations. We could use the solid--which can be sanded and refinished at least once or twice. The cost was about the same as other hardwood floors, but aside from the environmental benefits, I really like the clean look, which really goes well with a contemporary style. It's a great product.

Thank you for sharing that great bit of info. It's really interesting to hear from someone with actual experience with Bamboo flooring.
