Bacon Obsession

In 2003 I visited Papua New Guinea with the Coast Guard. Some of the people we were working with were laughing and we asked them what the joke was. They said that the elders were calling us “long pig” and wanted to invite us to a feast. The joke was that “long pig” is human meat, and if we accepted the invitation, we were going to be dinner. But then they reassured us they haven’t practiced cannibalism in 20 years, so we were safe. That was another joke, but we still didn’t sleep the whole week we were there.

"Long pig", LOL. Love the terminology! I can just see you being slow roasted on a spit over an open pit.

it is said (though I don't know if it's sensationalist propaganda) that pig flesh is somehow similar to human flesh and that the smell and taste of pigs is like that of humans.

I wonder if that is the reason why the smell of pig meat makes me uncomfortable. But if that is the case, why wouldn't it make more people uncomfortable?

I don't like it. Long story short, I did work at a funeral home and YES human flesh and pig is very similar, which is why it is used for medical research and such...

In the city I last lived, prior to moving to Germany; there is a pork place around every few corners... so there's lots of pork BBQ going on...

My friends were joking with me saying if we were going to be the main course, I would at least be kosher. I just let them have their fun instead of trying to explain how I could not be kosher.

Have you heard of the major restaurant food chain, Denny's 'Baconalia'?
If this isn't more proof of obsession, I don't know what to tell you.

Denny's Pushes Bacon Menu With Baconalia Hub

The downfall of many a vegetarian, cult favorite bacon is taking center stage at Denny's after a one-year hiatus with the return of its limited-time Baconalia menu. The roughly 10-week campaign kicked off March 12.

Isn't it interesting that it starts in the week leading up to Passover?

This year, however, Denny's is really pulling out all the stops to attract a bacon-loving Millennial target. That includes a hub on Denny's website with a slew of digital content.

They are even making videos with bad things happening and then eating bacon and the slogan is Each video ends with sizzling bacon and the message, "Bacon Makes It Better."

Basically when things go wrong, you need help or comforting, don't turn to G-d , turn to Bacon.

If you go to the website for Denny's you will see that my title for this thread wasn't overdoing it. Right on the front page it says:

Surrender to your Bacon Obsession

You can start your day with this:

NEW! Pepper Bacon Avocado Omelette

And lunchtime? no longer just the choice of a BLT, how about a

Spicy Pepper Bacon Jack Burger with an appetizer of BBQ Bacon Mac 'n Cheese Bites?

And for Dinner?
Bacon Pepper Jack Tilapia with a Maple Bacon Milk Shake

and top it off with a desert of

Maple Bacon Sundae or a NEW! Salted Caramel Brownie Sundae with Bacon!

I think the obsession has morphed into worship.

Uggh!!! That stuff sounds disgusting! (And I used to enjoy bacon, for breakfast, anyway. Now? Yuck!)

I mentioned this awhile back, but anyway. I still think the smell of pork is odd, maybe it is because I was raised not to eat it, maybe not. I tried once to taste cream of potato soup with bacon and honestly it was a weird taste. Then I tried a smoked turkey sandwich once and ABHORED the taste. I honestly thought that the smoked flavor must have been from pork somehow. I could not understand how people like that smoked flavor but I thought it was disgusting.

My husband and I went to a spice and tea exchange this past week and they have bacon salt (they have all sorts of salts and sugars). Barf. It smelled DISGUSTING.

I s'pose it's all a matter of perspective.

4:00 AM during roundup, and you're just returning from the morning camp chores; the smells of horse blankets, saddle leather and a fresh broke hay bail still lingering, mixed with the smells of the outdoors. As you approach you catch the smell of the campfire, fresh coffee, ...

and sizzling bacon!

Times like that can make a man glad to be a gentile- if a feller ever thought of such things at a time like that.

I gave it up. But it is not always easy.

By the way, you can pour the hot bacon grease on your boots and it seals the pores. It attracts bears, but other than that it is great waterproofing.

The bacon salt didn't smell like cooking bacon. It was gross. It smelled like dead, rotten animal to me.

It's for this reason that I rarely eat at Chinese restaurants (aside from the MSG). Many of them have a giant Buddha statue on the counter as you walk in. If I see a Buddha, I turn around and walk out.

The mixing of swine with other meats also confuses me, seeing as so many consumers (ie muslims) have restrictions on this meat as well.
Why make meat patties, sausages, etc from different types of meat?
There's probably some pragmatic answer, but you'd think they'd sell more by not doing this.

It helps bind ground meats, especially those with lower fat contents. Also adds flavor, and frankly it is cheaper so every ounce of pork added increases the bottom line. And non-pork eaters are an insignificant minority, most of whom buy from their own suppliers anyhow as there is more to their dietary laws than just no pork.

With increasing Islamization, many pseudo-Westernized Muslims could be "reached" by meat-makers (lol don't know what else to call them) since, in my experience, they still shop in Western grocery stores, if they but scrapped the swine.

The only word they will reach Muslims with is "profits"; and this only when there are enough of them to make it worthwhile "reaching" them. And there is nothing wrong with this. We all work to make money.

Reaching Muslims with Gd's Word is our job. I might suggest forming a food coop to include kosher meats and inviting Muslims to join. Interaction on mutually advantageous projects could make friendships, which in turn leads to opportunities to witness.

A coop of that type would not be kosher. Kosher is halal but Halah isn't Kosher.

I don't know of any orthodox Jews that would participate in that.

Bacon is being pushed as the 'tie that binds'. I was looking in a magazine recently and saw an ad for Oscar Mayer Bacon. It pictured a young woman fashionably dressed with a cartoon bubble above her head showing a tablet reader. Standing next to her was a guy with longish hair and a beard, a cable knit cardigan, looking like an ad for LL Bean, his bubble had an old fashioned book.

The two bubbles crossed over into each other over a package of bacon. In other words it is for everyone, everyone loves bacon fashionista or nerd.

Kosher is according to the word of the God of Israel.
Halel is offered to allah before it goes to market. I know many would argue the point but allah is NOT the same God as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - even the characteristics of these two are totally different, they are not the same. So Halel is food that has been offered to an idol. While not really a major problem for us, nowadays - but why even support such a group? The money has to go somewhere....just sayin'
