I still seem to be having the same problem with my avatar. I cannot edit it no matter what I do, nothing will save, I cannot even add a background and now I get this error message below.
Here is what happens.
When I first come to the editing page and my avatar loads into the editing window I also see a whole bunch of items load in the top right corner of the editing window, they are items my avatar is not wearing some of which I don't even own, layer after layer of items loads, then finally my avatar shows up and all these extra items disappear and only my avatar and one item appear in the editing window. Here is a photo before my avatar loads all the way:

I go to edit my avatar and start by removing all the current clothing and items in the box except the avatar body and eyes etc. When I start to edit the only thing in the window is the avatar. I add clothing and position, then I try to just save the changes I've made to the avatar alone and I get this error message and the changes will not save.
Error message:
You have too many items! Please reduce your items from 261 to 50 by selling them before trying to save again.
Does the system think all the items that originally loaded in the editing window are still there? I've tried deleting everything and starting from scratch, but that won't work either. I even tried selecting the option to "not use an avatar" thinking it might reset everything, but as soon as I go to re-add the avatar it starts right where I left off. It also won't let me add a background. I can select one, but when I click add nothing happens where as I can add clothing I just cannot save them.
