Some cats use them some don't. It all depends on your cats. If you are thinking of using one while you're away I would suggest buying it well in advance and allowing them to become acclimated to it. Don't remove all the other litter boxes right away. Also, do you only have 1 cat? If you have more than one you should really consider getting more than one automatic box. Generally the rule is 1 more box than cats (i.e. 2 cats = 3 boxes). Good luck

I've seen them sold at Wal Mart but I dont know what type of litter they use - and Im a firm believer in feline pine. :)

I did see some completely disposable litter pans once. I didnt look closely because Im short and they were on a top shelf, but that may be something to look into too.

If you travel a lot would you risk breaking an automatic machine? I know I probably would.

I have heard that there is a timer and a motion sensor. It'll rake out the pile or puddle like 10 seconds after the cat walks out. Some smarter cats will play in the litter box to make it do its thing ^_^

I am not really sold on the automatic litter boxes to be honest. I had 3 cats at the time when I owned one. It was the Littermaid brand I believe. My cats were a bit scared of it, because it would malfunction and start raking while they were still going to the bathroom.

It was indeed a pain to clean as someone else mentioned. In fact, while I was cleaning it, something shorted out electrically and never worked again. So you have to be extra careful when trying to maintain it which I found a bit irritating. I must say though that I owned one years ago, so they may have improved on them since then. I notice that they also offer the extra large boxes now for multiple cats. I highly recommend getting the biggest one they have if you do have more than 1 kitty, because the one I had was way too small for their taste and it was supposedly "regular size."

So basically...when they work, they're ok. But when they're acting up, it's not worth 2 cents. :) Hope that helps, and I hope if you do buy one that you have a lot better luck with it!

I found a web site that might be of assistance to you? A few of the self cleaning litter boxes have reviews.

Also, I have done business with a company called Drs. Foster and Smith for most of my pet supplies. Everything they recommended was beyond excellent. If they say it's good, it is. I even recall in their sales magazine they send out to me seeing reviews on those automatic litter boxes. So you may check their site as well for opinions? Theirs can certainly be trusted.

I hope this helps you in your decison process!
