My daughter has been in the "special needs" category since birth but she is still only 2 so she goes through alot of maybes. This week she had her Autism assesment and it was scary because her biological father refuses to believe there's anything wrong with her (he says this for court purposes). All of her symptoms seem to be in one category and they look for symptoms in three categories. Given her age they are unsure if she will develop other symptoms or get better. So they decided that they want me to work with the Autism psychologist and reasses her in a year. They said she has alot of symptoms and if she develops anything else I have to call them right away. I don't know how to feel about this open-ended diagnosis.

Good for you, getting on it so fast!

The earlier the diagnoses the better, because early intervention is the key with autism.

What are her symptoms?

I realized my son was autistic when he was 20-22 months old but I couldn't get anyone to listen. Thankfully I worked with autism for 14 years before getting married and was able to recognize the signs as soon as they started popping up. In severe cases you can recognize from birth but most case slip by till the children are older and not talking. In a few cases, they actually go undiagnosed till kindergarten and then its up to the teachers to tell the parents.

Take all the help you can get right now, don't worry about the diagnoses..its only a word and a means to help.

 God Bless!

Her problems from birth are not related to the suspected Autism. It's actually Asperger's Syndrome that they think she may have. She's extremely ridgid and only really functions with routine. Her speach was delayed so we did sign. She had trouble with making eye contact, dosen't like loud noises, And obsesses with items. She lines all her toys up and if she can't get them just right she knocks them down. She takes pretty bad tantrums that can last 5 hours or more. She dosent' like people too much and at daycare she is always stuck to the teacher. She trys to eat a lot of non-eatible foods. I could go on and on, but basically she's doing really well. I have quit my job to give her a routine schedule and she functions much better now. It's the changes she can't deal with.

How did the assesments go?

When my son went in for assesments, they said they couldn't give the diagnoses of Asbergers because his speech was delayed and he was too young for them to actually tell if it was Aspergers. My understanding is that Aspergers is actually the highest functioning level on the Autism spectrum.

Oregal: do you what the differences are?

How delayed is her speech? My son had 8 words when he started early intervention preschool at 3 years old. He started Kindergarten this year (5yrs old) and is speaking in full sentences. He has the diagnoses of Autism, Sub-Catagory: High Functioning.
