The news recently has been dominated by the fires burning in New South Wales and Victoria though relatively few people have actually died given the scale of the disaster. But with a bit of vision Australia could be converted into a fully green continent, with a large inland sea and agriculture and forests deep into the interior. It could triple its population to at least 90 million and become a major international power.

There are several long term reasons why Australia is prone to bushfires like those recently:

1) Unlike Europe , blessed with numerous navigable , inland waterways Australia is a hot desert in the middle and what lakes and rivers that form there are temporary and then evaporate. In Summer a body of very hot and dry air sits at the centre of the continent.

2) Australians do not have strong state tradition when it comes to large scale infrastructure projects or concerted efforts to clear the bush for that matter. Even their fireservice for all its recent bravery is an amateur voluntary organisation in the main.

3) Climate change is making the world a hotter place and even a 1 degree rise has had a massive impact on drought prone Australia

Well I was praying for Aussie land today and I thought I would offer what I believe is a long term solution to the problem.

Basically I think Australia should invest in a dam/pipeline infrastructure from the North of the country pumping water from the wet North to the rivers that run down towards Lake Eyre in the centre of the country. At the same time it should create some massive desalination plants in the South of the country and South West.
The desalination plants in the SW would run regardless of the weather to restock the water table and dams and to ensure that there is never a hosepipe ban in NSW or Victoria regardless of weather. If the dams are full and the water table high then they can switch these plants off. They should replace bush with cleared forest, perhaps using goats and sheep to keep the vegetation between trees down.

A massive set of desalination plants should be built near Port Augusta on the South coast generating 10,000,000m3 of water a day(that is the equivalent discharge rate of the Danube river - produced for $5m a day - these costs could be entirely covered by water sales at the new price of $5 a m3 and the surplus water go towards the project). .
All of this water should be pumped 1000km north and allowed to fill up Lake Eyre North and Lake Eyre South and much of the Simpson desert to create a new semi fresh water super lake in the heart of the country. A water way can be easily created along a line from Port Augusta to Lake Eyre North. The waters from the South and diverted from the North should be enough to fill the whole basin. Initially this water will be quite salty and so drainage to the sea will be encouraged. The whole scheme could be solar powered with water pumped up into mountain reservoirs during the day and then being released at night to generate hydroelectric power and maintain the flow of the river while the desalination plants close down for the night.

When it becomes clear what the boundaries of the new inland sea in the heart of Australia are then towns and farms and forests can firm up these boundaries which will be artificially maintained regardless of weather and rainfall. Trade and commerce can flow up and down these water ways much as they do in Europe and large stretches of useless land will become cultivated and habitable. This should also completely alter the climate of inner Australia as the water tables rise, the stock of vegetation increases.

Basically the scheme can also cost out.
Water could be desalinated on such a scale for about 50 cents a m3 by reverse osmosis. But sold for a higher price of $5-$6 a m3 compared to about $2.5-$4.5 at present. Australians would pay more for their water but never have bush fires or hosepipe bans again. The scheme only involves pumping water 200 m uphill from the South which could be accomplished by gravity and aqueducts or pumping stations also and diversion schemes in the North can use natural waterways for their water flow. The underlying price of water would probably decline due to the surplus but the extra tax paid on water could fund a federal scale development planning and pay off disgruntled people who currently live in salt lakes or deserts.

Possible or not? Can a democracy do such grand projects like the Chinese did with their Grand Canal?

Reminds me of the Nazi plan of Atlantropa, to dam the Mediterranean and lower its level to open farmland on its coasts. The water would then be pumped into the Qattara depression and other low lying areas of the Sahara to create artificial lakes and make the desert bloom.

Or the Soviets that tried to reverse rivers that flow into the Arctic, but ended up rather draining large areas of the Aral sea to grow Cotton in arid areas.

The Israelis in the Negev aren't really comparable, as that is a smaller area, and largely consists of water drained from the Jordan basin - which is probably not sustainable in the long run, as it is negatively impacting the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea.

Such large scale engineering projects are not really feasible for Democratic governments, as the payoff would be long away and the costs prohibitive. Besides, nowadays the Environmentalists would pitch a conniption.

That said, the British thought there was a large inland Sea in Australia in the 19th century, based on their knowledge of geology. Many explorers of the interior took along canoes. This is just the old stubborn Anglo-Saxon saying that if Geology won't play cricket with what we want, we'll just go ahead and make it.

Useful links. Australia already uses reverse Osmosis but its costs are far higher than in Israel. But as map shows they are exhausting ground water sources so desalination is probably their only option to avoid environmental meltdown in NSW, Victoria and parts of Queensland.

Like the bible verse, the return of Jews despite massive population increase has indeed made the deserts bloom.

Nazi, Communist and indeed in the modern era Libyans all came up with plans that were not environmentally sustainable. But cheap desalinstion technology gives an opportunity for a combination of Federal government and private initiative to reengineer Australias prospects. Without change they are staring into an abyss. But maintaining the pressure for change through wet years which come periodically will require a cross party consensus and commitment. Also i anticipate that peoplewhose land would be flooded or indigeounous peoples may also complain. If democracy cannot resolve problems essential for a nations survival or future prosperity then the Chinese model stsrts to look more attractive. I am praying for leadership to rise in Australia thst can take the big bold decisions and see them through.

Thank you!

Australians seem to be in a situation where they can inspire the world to look at stabilization of the climate in a more practical manner which can fit nicely with the warning given back in 2014 by CIA economist Jim Rickards that there were then seven hundred and ten trillion dollars in the worldwide Derivatives markets and he frankly admitted that he feared a one hundred trillion dollar meltdown in those markets that could spread like a virus and set in motion another 1929, a Bear Market?

FORGET IRAN, IRAQ, UKRAINE
THIS IS WHERE WWIII STARTS...

I live about a hundred miles from the Bay of Fundy and the Australians are in a position to play the role of the hero for the town of Truro (as well as for Anchorage Alaska that is facing a nearly identical situation, the residents of Truro, Moncton and Anchorage are perfectly set up to play the role of "Damsel in Distress)."

"If average ocean levels rose by eight to ten cms (3 or 4 inches) could high tide...
... rise by one meter in the Isthmus of Chignecto in Nova Scotia, Canada?

This question is logical because the geography of Canada's Bay of Fundy produces the world's highest tides. In my part of Nova Scotia in Guysborough County there is very little funnelling of tidal waters......... so high tide is only about one to one point five meters above low tide.

In the eastern area of the Bay of Fundy high tide levels are up by ten to fifteen meters."

Mega-scale desalination of ocean water in Australia, California, Israel, Jordan, Qatar, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia or in any other nation experiencing shortages of fresh water is really good news for the residents of the town of Truro, N. S., Canada, the City of Monton, New Brunswick, Canada as well as for Anchorage Alaska. Every cubic meter of ocean water desalinated and added to the water table of a nation experiencing water shortage is arguably the lowest cost long term solution to the threat posed by rising ocean levels that will likely be felt first along the Bay of Fundy as well as Anchorage, Alaska.

Some of you talented Australians and Europeans could really do something with this basic idea:

Oh... and there is a possible connection with peace in the Middle East due to this ancient Islamic prediction for what they term the Last Hour:

Thank you for this informative post!

Yes... it is true that Environmentalists in California over these past several decades have over and over and over again managed to kill well financed and well planned large scale desalination plans to provide fresh water to much of California and all the way to Las Vegas, Nevada.

But.... the mathematics of what happened on the land based Greenland Ice Pack in the summers of 2012 and 2019 could rapidly cause people to realize that a Carbon Tax applied all across Canada, (we produce less than two percent of global atmospheric emissions and our forests eat all of that up anyway), would do essentially NOTHING to prevent the rise in ocean levels that may well be felt first along Canada's Bay of Fundy due to the extreme tides there.

On the other hand... .every cubic meter of ocean water that is desalinated and added to the water table in Australia is really, really, really good news for residents of Truro, N. S., Canada, Moncton, N. B., Canada and Anchorage Alaska, (not to mention New Orleans, Miami, New York, Bangladesh, The Netherlands, The Maldive Islands and on and on and on and on)!

I found the results of this poll that I did on another forum to be quite encouraging indeed:

Am I correct to think that a Carbon Tax will do nothing to protect us from rising ocean levels?

If you will go to Google Images and search for "Global Warming Temperatures Arctic" you will see many charts and graphs that helps to explain the massive melting off Greenland in the summer of 2019. My guess is that this is probably related to the release of methane from the permafrost in the Arctic.

Carl Cantrell got their first, excellent find. He is right using desalination plants to restock aquifiers and water the desert is the answer to global warming.

I agree, Carl's solution is practical and once the truth comes out about how much H2O has been ADDED to central Antarctica over the past years and decades and centuries it will be realized soon that his idea may be the only way to prevent many nations from going bankrupt attempting to finance sea walls, dikes and other methods of attempting to prevent damage from rising ocean levels.

I made the following statement on another forum and this basic concept has not been disproven yet:

Global Warming and Environment: Rejecting Alarmism and Focusing on Concrete Improvements

Since 2007 I've been promoting an alternative theory on stabilization of the climate. I take climate change itself very seriously, especially the threat of rising ocean levels but......... I regard a Carbon Tax or Cap and Trade System as a colossal waste of money, time, energy and talent. I believe that only nations with lots of desert are in a position to do what needs to be done to address the threat of rising ocean levels.

If Canadians were aware of how much H2O was being added to the central region of Antarctica they would know that a Carbon Tax is a joke played on an underinformed population.

It looks perhaps as if the amount of H2O being ADDED to central Antarctica will not be protecting our vulnerable cities, towns and island nations for much longer.......so.... perhaps the Australians can come up with a plan that will actually work?!

Carl and I warned them about this option beginning back in 2007 but perhaps we were too sarcastic which may have made our advice difficult to accept?????

My two somewhat humorous submissions for $25 million Virgin Earth Challenge.

Frankly though... it is more likely that our showing respect for Isaiah was what probably turned them off in a world where all supposedly intelligent people are supposed to mindlessly accept the philosophy of Richard Dawkins Ph. D????

Quite the semi opposite. Man is responsible for the good stuff and the bad stuff.

God seems to look on impassionately.

Due to the fact that the Islamic world will generally not deal directly with Israel.....
in the spirit of Tikkun Olam Israel donated impressive solar desalination technology to Norway... so that their ally Norway could share that tech with the Islamic world.

Well Aussies are not exactly practicing their faith and asking God to bless the land in Sunday worship even though a majority are nominal Christians.

Also they are foul weather environmentalists that forget the cause once it rains. Solutions and Stewardship require persistant commitment

So are churchless Aussies draining water tables for their swimming pools in the desert contributing more to Global Warming than coal burning Chinese and gas guzzling Americans?

I really don't know the answer to that because it seems as if President George W. Bush and P. M. Stephen Harper of Canada decided to do nothing and say essentially nothing about climate change perhaps partly because of the information on Global Dimming that indicated that allowing lots of ash, soot and dust from industry to go into the atmosphere might just delay a general global warming trend and slow down somewhat the melting of the land based Greenland Ice Sheet until we could get a better idea on what to do..........

... .and frankly.... their policy may have been somewhat wise under the circumstances that they faced back then .....

because Global Dimming.... much like a volcanic eruption.... does tend to cause the climate to go into a cooling phase?????

In the three days after 9-11 temperatures in the USA shot up rapidly which was kind of shocking because only one major factor in Global Dimming was virtually eliminated.... jet trails.

Volcanic eruptions or meteor strikes have also been examples of Global dimming due to particles in the atmosphere. But mankinds contribution to Global Warming seems undeniable in recent years. Making deserts bloom does seem like a way of reversing that trend but I worry that the political commitment is simply not there for this.

Again this is an issue of whether Democracies can make the tough calls and persistent sacrifices to make their countries thrive and survive in the long run. The Chinese have 50 year planning in place while our project plans never see beyond potential bonuses at years end.
